Biotin Gummies vs Pills: Which Is Better?

Biotin gummies vs pills: our three formats all list 5,000 to 6,000 mcg, so the real choice comes down to sugar, allergens, iron and swallowing.

The short answer: Biotin gummies vs pills isn't really a contest over biotin. Our Biotin & Collagen Gummies carry 6000 mcg per 2-gummy serving, and our Biotin & Horsetail Hair Capsules carry 5,000 mcg per 2-capsule serving. Both dwarf the NIH's adult recommendation of 30 mcg a day. What separates them is 4 g of added sugars in the gummy, the capsule's 14.5 mg of iron and its warning for children, and whether you'd rather chew or swallow.

Key takeaways

  • Our three biotin formats land within 1,000 mcg of each other: 6000 mcg per 2-gummy serving, 5,000 mcg per 2-capsule serving and 5000 mcg per 1-strip serving.
  • We found no federal source saying biotin absorbs better from a gummy, a capsule or a strip, so absorption claims shouldn't decide your pick.
  • Each 2-gummy serving of the Biotin & Collagen Gummies lists 4 g of added sugars, 8% of the Daily Value on its panel.
  • The Biotin & Horsetail Hair Capsules add 14.5 mg of iron and a 359 mg herbal blend that includes fo-ti per 2-capsule serving. Their label carries an iron WARNING for children, and the directions open with "For adults only."
  • The 5,000mcg Biotin Strips dissolve on your tongue with no water and list just three nutrients: biotin, vitamin D3 and folate.

Full disclosure: Betterly sells the gummy, the capsule and the strip compared here, but no biotin tablet. We earn money on any of the three, so every figure here comes straight off their Supplement Facts panels.

Biotin gummies vs pills: which is better for most people?

Neither biotin gummies nor biotin pills are better across the board; the better pick is the format whose sugar, allergens and extras fit your day.

Online, this debate usually turns on chewing versus swallowing. Our three panels point to a better test: find your deal-breaker, whether it's sugar, fish, soy, iron or a glass of water.

The biotin row only spans 5,000 to 6,000 mcg, so it can't settle anything. Only the gummy lists added sugars, and its Contains line names fish and coconut. The capsule alone has iron and names soy. The strip has the shortest panel. Cross off any format that fails your test, and if two survive, choose the one you'll remember daily.

Do biotin gummies absorb better than capsules or tablets?

No federal source we reviewed compares how well biotin absorbs from gummies, capsules, tablets or strips, so we found nothing to check an absorption promise against.

Some online listings promise that one format absorbs better than another. None of our three labels makes that claim, and neither will we.

The biotin fact sheet from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) speaks to quantity instead. Its adult recommendation is 30 mcg a day, and it says food alone gets most people there. It describes biotin as a B vitamin your body uses to convert the carbs, fat and protein you eat into energy.

Against that 30 mcg, the capsule and strip each hold about 167 times the adult amount and the gummy 200 times, so even a gap between formats, if one existed, wouldn't leave you short. For the backstory on why so many hair formulas settle on 5,000 mcg, see our biotin 5,000 mcg explainer.

How much sugar does a biotin gummy add compared with a pill?

Our Biotin & Collagen Gummies carry 4 g of added sugars in every 2-gummy serving, while neither our biotin capsule nor our biotin strip prints a sugar row.

Three of the gummy's nine other ingredients are sweeteners: glucose syrup, sugar and glucose. Each serving also lists 15 calories.

The panel's 8% is measured against a 50 g daily benchmark. That Daily Value, per the FDA's explainer on added sugars on the Nutrition Facts label, assumes a 2,000-calorie diet, and the agency counts 5% DV or less as low and 20% DV or more as high. So 4 g lands in the middle band, nearer low than high. If you take other gummy supplements, add their added-sugar rows to this one.

None of the capsule's four other ingredients is a sweetener. The strip gets its sweetness from monk fruit extract, steviol glycosides and mannitol, and its panel has no calorie line.

Biotin gummies vs capsules: what does the capsule add?

Our Biotin & Horsetail Hair Capsules add 14.5 mg of iron, 880 mcg of folic acid and a 359 mg herbal blend to 5,000 mcg of biotin per 2-capsule serving.

Its panel runs through 16 vitamin and mineral rows before the blend, so it reads like a hair-focused multivitamin. The iron row brings this label warning, word for word:

"WARNING: Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6. Keep this product out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately."

The NIH iron fact sheet for consumers explains that iron-containing supplements carry a keep-away-from-children statement for this reason. ODS caps adult iron intake at 45 mg daily, counting food, drinks and supplements together. One capsule serving takes up 14.5 mg of it, printed on the panel as 81% DV.

Three more details from that label:

  • Its suggested use begins with "For adults only."
  • The blend includes plant sterols from soybean, and the Contains line lists soy.
  • The 359 mg blend holds 11 ingredients, including horsetail, fo-ti, saw palmetto and Chinese peony, but the label gives only the total, not each herb's share.

Fo-ti needs a flag of its own. NIH's LiverTox reference, which tracks how medicines and supplements affect the liver, links Polygonum multiflorum (fo-ti) to reports of liver injury. Our blend lists fo-ti without saying how much each serving holds.

In its favor, the capsule has no sugar row, fish or coconut. It suits an adult who swallows capsules easily and has run the iron and the herbal blend past a healthcare provider first.

Are biotin strips better than gummies or tablets?

Our 5,000mcg Biotin Strips aren't stronger than a gummy or tablet; they suit people who want no water, no chewing and the shortest panel of our three biotin products.

Each orange-flavored strip weighs 100 mg and lists just three nutrients: biotin at 5000 mcg, vitamin D3 at 20 mcg, and folate listed as 400 mcg DFE, which the panel says comes from 240 mcg of folic acid.

Count its 20 mcg of vitamin D3 toward any other vitamin D you take. We don't sell a biotin tablet, so read any tablet you're weighing for serving size, the biotin row, any sugar row and the Contains line.

If swallowing is the whole reason you're comparing, our roundup of vitamin options if you can't swallow pills covers more nutrients than biotin.

Which biotin format should you choose?

Pick a biotin format by your biggest constraint: sugar steers you to the capsule or strip, pill trouble to the gummy or strip, and allergens can rule one out.

  • You'd rather not swallow anything: the gummy or the strip.
  • You're keeping added sugar low: the strip or the capsule.
  • You avoid fish or tree nuts: skip the gummy, whose Contains line lists tilapia and coconut.
  • You avoid soy: the capsule is the only one of our three whose Contains line names it. The strip prints no Contains line, though lecithin, source unstated, appears in its ingredients.
  • You already take a multivitamin with iron: skip the capsule, and check that multi's biotin row before adding anything.

You'll find all three together on our hair, skin and nails shelf, each product page showing its full panel.

From our shop: Biotin & Collagen Gummies — the only one of our three biotin formats you chew, listing 6000 mcg of biotin and 12 mg of fish collagen in each 2-gummy passion fruit serving.

Does the format change how or when you take biotin?

The format changes the method, not the schedule: you chew the gummies, swallow the capsules or let the strip melt, daily, as each label says.

Two capsules usually go down with a drink. The gummies need nothing but chewing, and the strip's label says to "place 1 oral strip on the tongue daily and allow it to dissolve," so it works in a parked car or at a desk.

The gummy label's version is "2 gummies daily or as directed by a healthcare professional." The capsule label starts with "For adults only" before asking for two capsules daily. Not one of them ties biotin to breakfast, bedtime or an empty stomach, so the right time is the one you'll keep.

Can you switch between biotin formats or use two?

Switching days is fine, but stacking two formats on one day isn't, since all three labels print "Do not exceed recommended dose." A strip on travel days should replace your gummies, not join them.

Stacking also doubles the biotin that can throw off lab results, and folate is why the capsule pairs badly with either of the other two. Our biotin cautions and stacking guide runs the capsule-plus-gummy numbers. Capsule plus strip fails too: 880 mcg of folic acid plus 240 mcg is 1,120 mcg. The NIH folate fact sheet caps adults at 1,000 mcg a day from supplements and fortified foods.

From our shop: 5,000mcg Biotin Strips — orange oral strips that dissolve on the tongue with no water, each listing 5000 mcg of biotin alongside vitamin D3 and folate.

When don't you need a biotin gummy, capsule or strip?

You likely don't need any biotin format if you eat a varied diet, because ODS says food supplies enough biotin for most people.

Its food list runs from eggs, meat and fish to seeds, nuts, spinach and sweet potatoes. ODS flags pregnancy and breastfeeding as stages when people fall short more often.

A separate biotin product also adds little in these cases:

  • Your multivitamin already covers it. Each 2-capsule serving of our Daily Multivitamin Capsules, for example, lists 300 mcg of biotin, which is 10 times the adult amount.
  • You're after collagen in real amounts. The gummy's 12 mg of fish collagen is a tiny fraction of a gram.
  • You're counting on a format to change how your hair or nails look by a set date. ODS says the support for biotin's hair, skin and nail claims is limited, and no label of ours gives a timeframe.

Who should check with a healthcare provider first?

See a healthcare provider before any of our biotin formats if you take medication, have a medical condition, are pregnant, nursing or under 18, or have lab work due.

All three labels share one caution: "Consult a physician if pregnant, nursing, under 18, or have a medical condition."

Bloodwork is the caution that follows biotin into every format. According to ODS, supplements holding more biotin than the recommended amount can make some lab results come back wrong, and it names thyroid hormone tests as one example. Mention your biotin when a test is ordered.

The capsule's iron carries this label warning, word for word:

"WARNING: Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6. Keep this product out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately."

The ODS iron page adds that iron supplements and some medicines can interfere with each other.

Anyone considering the capsule, prescription or not, should show its blend to a pharmacist or provider first, because it includes fo-ti, saw palmetto and Chinese peony.

The gummy lists 1200 mcg of vitamin A as retinyl acetate per 2-gummy serving, so bring that row to any prenatal appointment.

FAQ: biotin gummies vs pills

Do biotin gummies or pills work better?

Neither works better, because no federal source ranks biotin gummies above biotin pills or the other way around. ODS also finds little support for biotin's hair, skin and nail marketing in general, whatever the format. Since our three formats list 5,000 to 6,000 mcg of biotin per serving, let sugar, allergens, iron and how easily you'll take one each day make the call.

Do collagen gummies work as well as collagen pills?

Collagen gummies and collagen pills differ mainly in how much collagen fits inside them, not in their shape. Our Biotin & Collagen Gummies carry 12 mg of fish collagen per 2-gummy serving, and our Collagen & Vitamin E Strips carry 100 mg per 1-strip serving. Neither comes near a gram. We don't sell a collagen capsule, so compare the collagen row, in milligrams or grams, on any pill you're weighing.

Are gummy vitamins as good as pills?

Gummy vitamins aren't automatically better or worse than pills, but the format shapes the panel. Our biotin gummy's panel has room for nine vitamins, iodine and zinc, yet no iron, calcium or magnesium. Our biotin capsule lists 16 vitamin and mineral rows, all three of those included, plus a 359 mg herbal blend per 2-capsule serving. Sugar rides along with the chew, 4 g of added sugars in each 2-gummy serving, and the candy taste means it needs a shelf kids can't reach.

Does the format change biotin's effect on lab tests?

No, switching formats won't change it. ODS ties the lab-test problem to how much biotin you take, above recommended amounts, and says nothing about gummies versus capsules or strips. All three of ours list 5,000 to 6,000 mcg per serving, far past the 30 mcg adult amount. Whichever you use, mention it when bloodwork is ordered and follow your care team's advice on stopping beforehand.

How long does one container of each format last?

Each of our three biotin products lasts 30 days at the label's suggested use. That's 60 gummies at 2 a day, 60 capsules at 2 a day, or 30 strips at 1 a day. All three labels ask you to keep the container in a cool, dry spot.
