The short version

One men's formula at a time: reading the overlap

Men's health, as a supplement shelf, is narrower than the name suggests. It comes down to a short list of traditional botanicals — saw palmetto and pygeum, tongkat ali, horny goat weed, maca, tribulus and the mountain resin shilajit — with zinc and magnesium turning up in the formulas built around them. Those plants come from very different traditions, from Ayurveda and Chinese herbal practice to the Andes, where maca is still eaten as a root vegetable, and the research on most of them is thinner than their reputations. So this collection is written around the one thing you can check before buying: the label. The labels themselves reach for words like vitality and stamina, and that is the honest scope — everyday support, taken as a daily habit beside the training, sleep and meals that do most of the work, and never a replacement for any of them.

Before comparing herbs, compare how each label prints its amounts, because the three formulas worth starting with do it three different ways. Saw Palmetto & Pygeum Prostate Capsules give every one of nine rows its own milligram figure: 300 mg of saw palmetto fruit extract and 200 mg of pygeum bark up front, then pumpkin seed, grape seed, nettle leaf, boron, lycopene, vitamin E and vitamin B6, with no proprietary blend anywhere on the panel. Shilajit & Tongkat Ali Capsules print extract ratios instead — 400 mg of a 30:1 shilajit and 100 mg of a 300:1 tongkat ali root, plus ashwagandha and sea moss at 100 mg each — and a ratio records how much raw material went into each part of finished extract: useful context, but not a measure of what the capsule delivers, and never directly comparable with a row of plain root.

Horny Goat Weed & Maca Capsules print a standardization, the number that makes one epimedium extract comparable with another: 1,000 mg of extract carrying 100 mg of icariins, alongside 62.5 mg of powdered maca root and seven smaller rows, in a formula its label calls an herbal vitality and stamina blend. One practical difference sits in the shells: the saw palmetto and horny goat weed capsules use gelatin, while the shilajit capsule is plant cellulose and vegan.

Then read across the panels before adding a second bottle, because the same few plants recur. Tongkat ali — printed as longjack on some panels and as Eurycoma longifolia on all of them — appears in four of the five formulas here; saw palmetto appears in three; horny goat weed, maca and tribulus in two each. Zinc is the row to total. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements caps adult zinc at 40 mg a day with meals and every supplement counted together — a ceiling to stay under, not an amount to aim for. Tribulus, Zinc & Magnesium Capsules supply 30 mg at their three-capsule bedtime serving, which leaves 10 mg of room for food when an adult man's daily need is 11 mg, so an ordinary diet can carry the total past the limit; their 200 mg of magnesium also takes more than half the NIH's 350 mg ceiling for magnesium from supplements. That makes them a bottle to run past a healthcare provider before it becomes a nightly routine.

Tongkat Ali, Maca & Ginseng Capsules go further, and are tablets despite the name: two a day, exactly as the label directs, deliver 50 mg of zinc, past the adult limit before any food is counted, so we do not suggest them, and anyone considering them should show the panel to a healthcare provider first. Their proprietary blend also includes oyster extract, a shellfish. What is left is a short routine: one of the three formulas above, taken as its label directs for several consistent weeks, with a word to your healthcare provider first if you take medication or manage a medical condition. Subscribe & Save keeps that bottle arriving at 10% off, and you can cancel it from your account anytime. Shilajit, maca and ginseng turn up again on the slower-building adaptogen shelf, and each amount quoted here was checked against the supplier's written specification, blend totals included — why we print the awkward rows too.

Men's Health questions, answered

Is tongkat ali the same as longjack?
Yes — both names refer to one plant, Eurycoma longifolia, so the botanical name, not the common one, is what to match between labels. It turns up in four formulas in this collection at very different strengths: Shilajit & Tongkat Ali Capsules hold it as a 300:1 root extract at 100 mg, the horny goat weed formula as 1 mg of a 100:1 extract, and the tribulus formula and the tongkat ali tablets as 50 mg and 400 mg of root with no ratio printed (the tablets' zinc row is covered below). A ratio row and a plain-root row cannot be added together, which is one more reason to run one formula at a time.
What is the difference between saw palmetto and pygeum?
They come from different plants on different continents: saw palmetto is the berry of Serenoa repens, a scrubby palm of the U.S. Southeast, and pygeum is the bark of an evergreen tree from Africa's mountain forests. On the panel of Saw Palmetto & Pygeum Prostate Capsules they sit side by side at 300 mg and 200 mg, and of the two only the pygeum row states a standardization — 3% phytosterols. Follow the label's two-capsule serving with 6–8 oz of water, and talk to your healthcare provider before use if you take medication or have a medical condition.
How much zinc is too much?
For adults, 40 mg a day is the ceiling the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements gives for zinc, counting food and supplements together, against a daily need of 11 mg for adult men. Tribulus, Zinc & Magnesium Capsules supply 30 mg per serving, which leaves 10 mg of room for everything eaten that day, and adding the 15 mg in Daily Multivitamin Capsules takes supplements alone to 45 mg, so the tribulus formula is worth checking with a healthcare provider before daily use. Tongkat Ali, Maca & Ginseng Capsules are over the limit on their own, at 50 mg when taken as the label directs, so show that label to a healthcare provider before taking it; the two zinc formulas together would reach 80 mg, twice the limit.
What does the icariin figure on a horny goat weed label mean?
Icariins are flavonoids the epimedium plant makes, and a standardization means the extract is produced to reach a stated amount of them instead of whatever a batch happens to hold. Horny Goat Weed & Maca Capsules print 100 mg of icariins inside 1,000 mg of epimedium extract, which works out to 10% — the figure to compare between bottles, since two extracts of equal weight can carry very different amounts. Horny goat weed also appears at 50 mg in the tribulus formula, which prints no icariin figure, so the icariins in the two cannot be added up; choose one, and take it as the label directs.
