The two on the front of the bottle

Horny goat weed is the common name for epimedium, a low flowering plant; the species here is Epimedium sagittatum, and the part used is the aerial portion — growth above ground rather than root. At 1000 mg it's by far the biggest row, and it carries a standardization many labels leave off: 100 mg of icariins. Icariins are the flavonoid compounds the epimedium plant makes, and naming the figure means the extract is made to hit it rather than varying batch to batch.

Maca is Lepidium meyenii, a root vegetable in the brassica family — the same group as turnips and radishes — grown high in the Peruvian Andes. It's here as plain dried root powder, 62.5 mg, not an extract.

The rest of the panel

Two amino acids sit on the label. L-phenylalanine, 30 mg, is an essential amino acid, meaning the body can't build it and has to get it from food. L-arginine appears at 20 mg as the base — the free-form amino acid rather than a salt like the hydrochloride.

The botanicals fill in around them. Muira puama, 20 mg, is the root of Ptychopetalum olacoides, a shrub from the Brazilian Amazon. Asian ginseng, 20 mg, is Panax ginseng root as a plain powder. Saw palmetto, 10 mg, is the small dark fruit of Serenoa repens, a fan palm native to the southeastern United States.

Two concentrated extracts round it out, and their ratios explain the small numbers. Polypody vulgare at 1 mg is a 20:1 extract — twenty parts of raw plant material reduced down to one part extract. Longjack at 1 mg, from Eurycoma longifolia (you'll also see it sold as tongkat ali), is a 100:1 extract of the root.

How it's taken

Two capsules once a day, so sixty capsules is thirty servings. No powder, no measuring, no taste. Worth saying plainly: the shell is a gelatin capsule, so this formula isn't vegetarian or vegan. Rice flour and vegetable magnesium stearate are the only other ingredients. Store it somewhere cool and dry.

Who it's for

Adults shopping the horny goat weed, maca or tongkat ali aisle who'd rather read one panel than buy nine bottles. Every amount is printed in milligrams, so this label compares line by line against anything else on the shelf — starting with the icariin figure, the number worth checking on any epimedium product.

How to use it

Take two (2) capsules once a day.

What's in it

Gelatin Capsule, Rice Flour, Vegetable Magnesium Stearate.
