The short version

What a probiotic label is actually counting

Probiotics are the one ingredient on a supplement panel counted as living cells rather than only weighed: live microorganisms, mostly from the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium groups that also turn up in many yogurts and kefirs, taken to support digestive health day to day. Everything on this page carries probiotic cultures, which makes it narrower on purpose than our wider digestion shelf, where fiber, glutamine and liver botanicals cover the rest of that ground. It is also the shelf where marketing leans hardest on one big number. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that no official recommendations exist for healthy people's use of probiotics, and that what a product offers depends on which microbes it holds as well as how many. So this page sorts its products by what their labels actually print.

Read a probiotic panel for three things: the count, the names, and what the count is attached to. Multi-Strain Probiotic Capsules is the broad option — thirteen cultures, eight Lactobacillus and five Bifidobacterium, sharing one 317 mg row stated as 20 billion CFU in a single cellulose capsule. It names each culture by species, without strain codes or per-culture amounts, and its footnote dates the count to the time of manufacture, the same qualifier the apple cider vinegar capsule's panel puts on its 1 billion. Probiotic & Prebiotic Capsules goes the other way on detail: four cultures, each with a strain code — La-14, Bl-04, Lp-115 and Lpc-37 — in an 800 mg blend stated as 40 billion CFU, a figure that belongs to the two-capsule serving rather than to either capsule, beside 24 mg of fructooligosaccharide, a prebiotic fiber, and 60 mg of complex marine polysaccharide.

The strips narrow it to one species each at an identical 10 billion: 10 Billion CFU Probiotic Strips carry Bifidobacterium lactis with 50 mg of polydextrose, a soluble fiber, while Probiotic & Digestive Enzyme Strips carry Bacillus coagulans, a spore-forming species, with protease, papain and bromelain. Equal counts, different organisms, so neither strip substitutes for the other.

Directions vary more across this shelf than the formats suggest, so take each product exactly as its own label directs: the multi-strain capsule once a day with 6 to 8 oz of water, the prebiotic capsules two a day, which that label suggests splitting between day and evening, and the strips dissolved on the tongue with no water at all. One product sits apart. Oral Probiotic & Xylitol Chewables is a mouth product rather than a gut one — 4 billion CFU across three coded strains, xylitol and guava in a 325 mg blend, and 5 mg of a microcrystalline hydroxyapatite complex — chewed thoroughly after a meal, never swallowed whole, and used on top of brushing and flossing, never in place of them. Every bottle and pack here holds thirty days at label directions, which makes one full pack the natural length of a first trial; keep it cool and dry as its label asks, since the count describes living cultures, and every label here asks you to consult a physician first if you are pregnant, nursing, under 18 or have a medical condition.

A monthly Subscribe & Save, 10% off and cancellable from your account, renews it every month on its own. And because these labels disclose such different things — strain codes on some, species names alone on others, no culture count at all on one — our rule of repeating each supplier specification without embellishing it matters more on this page than almost anywhere else in the store.

Probiotics questions, answered

Is a higher CFU count better?
Not by itself. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements says a higher count does not necessarily bring more benefit, so a count tells you little until you know which cultures it covers. This collection runs from 1 billion CFU of one coded strain in Apple Cider Vinegar & Probiotic Capsules to 40 billion across four coded strains in Probiotic & Prebiotic Capsules, and those are two different formulas rather than a weak and a strong version of one. Check the serving size too: both of those figures cover a two-capsule serving, not a single capsule.
What do the codes after a probiotic's name mean?
A name like Lactobacillus acidophilus identifies a species; a code such as LA85 or La-14 identifies the particular strain of that species that was cultured, and findings about one strain do not automatically apply to another. Three labels here print codes: the prebiotic capsules (La-14, Bl-04, Lp-115, Lpc-37), the apple cider vinegar capsules (LA85) and the oral chewables (LS97, LC86, LA85). Multi-Strain Probiotic Capsules lists its thirteen by species name only, trading that depth for breadth, and both strips and the digestive enzyme capsules name their cultures without codes too. Each product page gives the names exactly as its label does and adds nothing, so a code the label leaves out is left out there as well.
Probiotic capsule, strip or chewable: which format should I choose?
Choose by where you will actually take it every day. The capsules are swallowed; the two strips are pullulan films you let dissolve on your tongue, no water needed, which suits a desk drawer or a travel bag. Oral Probiotic & Xylitol Chewables answer a different question: they are built for the mouth, and the directions say to chew each tablet thoroughly after a meal so the ingredients spend time with the mouth and teeth. Because they are made with xylitol, keep the tablets away from dogs as well as children: the FDA warns that xylitol is dangerous for dogs.
Why is there no CFU count on the digestive enzyme capsules?
Because the panel does not print one. Digestive Enzyme & Probiotic Capsules lists Lactobacillus acidophilus, L. casei and L. plantarum inside its 400 mg Makzyme-Pro™ blend, beside fungal protease, bromelain, papain, fungal lipase, fungal lactase and alpha-galactosidase, and gives that whole blend one activity figure instead, 2,500 HUT, with no culture count anywhere on the panel. We will not invent a figure the label does not state. If a count is how you compare probiotics, every other product here prints one; if you want enzymes and cultures in a single capsule, this is that formula, taken one capsule twice a day, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal.
