What CFU means, and what the strain codes are

CFU stands for colony-forming unit — the count of viable bacteria capable of multiplying, which is how live cultures are measured rather than by weight. This panel gives both numbers: 40 billion CFU, and the 800mg of blend they arrive in.

The more useful detail is the strain codes. La-14, Bl-04, Lp-115 and Lpc-37 aren't decoration — a probiotic species is a broad category, and the code names the specific strain inside it, the way a breed sits inside a species. Plenty of labels stop at "Lactobacillus acidophilus." This one says which acidophilus.

Three of the four are lactobacilli — acidophilus, plantarum and paracasei — which are rod-shaped, lactic-acid-producing bacteria. Bifidobacterium lactis belongs to a different genus entirely, branched rather than rod-shaped.

MAKTREK® (Bi-Pass Technology) is the trademarked delivery system the manufacturer lists at the top of the blend. We're repeating the panel's wording for it exactly and not adding to it.

The prebiotic side

A prebiotic isn't a bacterium — it's food for one. Fructooligosaccharide, at 24mg, is a short chain of fructose units — a soluble plant fibre. Humans lack the enzymes to break it down in the small intestine, which is what makes it a fibre rather than a sugar.

Complex marine polysaccharide, at 60mg, is the other carbohydrate on the panel — a long-chain sugar molecule of marine origin. That's what the row says, and that's what we'll say. Pairing carbohydrate with culture is the whole idea of the format: probiotic and prebiotic in one capsule instead of two bottles.

How it's taken

Two capsules daily, and the label offers a split option — one during the day and one in the evening — which is the manufacturer's own "for best results" note. The shell is hypromellose, a vegetable capsule rather than gelatin. Beyond it, rice maltodextrin and L-leucine are the only other ingredients.

Store it in a cool, dry place, as the label directs.

Who it's for

Anyone shopping the 40 billion CFU tier who wants strain codes rather than a vague species list, and anyone who'd rather not buy a separate fibre supplement to go alongside. Three rows, four strains, two capsules.

How to use it

As a dietary supplement, take two (2) capsules once daily. For best results, take one (1) capsule during the day and one (1) capsule in the evening.

What's in it

Other ingredients: Hypromellose (vegetable capsule), Rice maltodextrin, L-Leucine.
