What you get in every capsule

  • Makzyme-Pro™ Enzyme Blend — 2500 HUT / 400 mg, one figure for the whole blend: fungal protease (from Aspergillus oryzae), Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, bromelain, papain, fungal lipase, fungal lactase and alpha-galactosidase
  • 60 veggie capsules, 60 servings, one capsule per serving
  • No daily value is established for the blend, so its row carries **
  • Vegan, vegetarian and gluten free

Why the units look strange

Most supplement panels count milligrams. Enzyme panels count activity, because what matters about an enzyme is how much work it does rather than how much it weighs — and each enzyme class has its own assay and its own unit. This panel prints one of them: HUT, which measures protease activity. That's why the blend is printed as "2500 HUT/400mg": the 400 mg is its weight, the 2500 HUT is its measured protease activity. Comparing two enzyme products means comparing these units, not the milligrams — and on this label the 2500 HUT is the only one: the other enzymes in the blend carry no figure of their own.

What's in the blend

The Makzyme-Pro™ Enzyme Blend contains fungal protease from Aspergillus oryzae — a protease is the enzyme class named for protein, its substrate — alongside three Lactobacillus cultures: Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei and Lactobacillus plantarum. These are the probiotic side of the formula, and they sit inside the blend on the panel rather than getting a CFU count of their own. The panel doesn't state a CFU figure, so we won't invent one.

The same blend lists five more enzymes, none with an amount of its own. Bromelain is a protease group originally isolated from pineapple. Papain is the protease from papaya. Fungal lipase belongs to the lipase class, named for lipids. Fungal lactase is the lactase class, named for the sugar lactose. Alpha-galactosidase is named the same way, for the alpha-galactoside sugars.

How it's taken

One capsule, twice a day, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal. Sixty capsules at that rate is a thirty-day bottle. The shell is hypromellose — a plant-derived vegetable capsule, no gelatin — with vegetable magnesium stearate and silicon dioxide as the flow agents. The label's other ingredients also list maltodextrin. The label's other ingredients also list maltodextrin. It's a capsule rather than a powder or chewable, so there's nothing to mix and nothing to taste.

Who it's for

People who want the enzyme and probiotic sides in one capsule instead of two bottles, and anyone who wants a blend that says what's in it: the panel names all nine of its enzymes and cultures, under one 2500 HUT / 400 mg figure. The vegetable capsule and the vegan, vegetarian and gluten free status make it straightforward for plant-based routines.
