What 10 billion CFU actually means
CFU stands for colony-forming units: a count of the live organisms in a serving that are capable of reproducing. It's the standard unit for a probiotic because milligrams on their own tell you very little about a living culture — weight counts the material, CFU counts what's viable.
Both numbers on this panel describe the same row. 37.5mg of Bifidobacterium lactis is the weight; 10 Billion CFU is the count. One ingredient, two ways of measuring it, which is worth knowing when you're comparing probiotic labels and wondering why the figures look doubled.
Bifidobacterium lactis itself is a bifidobacterium — a genus of rod-shaped, oxygen-averse bacteria, the same family used in cultured foods and in most probiotic formulas on the shelf. It's among the more widely used species in the category, which is why you'll see the name on so many packs.
And the polydextrose
Polydextrose is a soluble fiber built by polymerising glucose — a manufactured carbohydrate used in food production as a bulking agent and a sugar replacer. On this panel it's the larger of the two rows at 50mg. Pairing a fiber with a bacterial culture in the same formula is a common piece of supplement design, and here that pairing is the whole panel: one culture, one fiber.
Why a strip instead of a capsule
The film is pullulan, a polysaccharide made by fermentation and the same material vegetarian capsule shells are made from, with cellulose for structure, sunflower lecithin — not soy — to hold it together, and medium chain triglycerides carrying the blend. You put it on your tongue, it dissolves, and there's nothing to swallow and nothing to wash it down with.
The trade-off is size. A 180mg strip is a small amount of material, and a two-row panel reflects that. What it buys you is a probiotic you can take at a desk, on a plane or halfway through a commute without a glass of water anywhere.
How it tastes
Mixed berry, with malic acid for the tart edge — malic acid is the sour note in a green apple. It's sweetened with monk fruit extract, mannitol, erythritol and steviol glycoside, so it lands bright rather than sugary, and it's gone in a few seconds.
Who it's for
Anyone who wants a daily probiotic without a capsule to swallow. It's lactose free and gluten free, it carries no allergen line, and a pack is a month at one strip a day.
How to use it
Place 1 oral strip on the tongue daily and allow it to dissolve.
What's in it
Pullulan, Cellulose, Mannitol, Mixed berry flavor, Sunflower Lecithin, Monk fruit extract, Erythritol, Medium chain triglycerides, Malic acid, Steviol glycoside.
