The short answer: You can take hair, skin and nails vitamins with a multivitamin if you total the rows both labels share. Our Biotin & Horsetail Hair Capsules plus our Daily Multivitamin Capsules list 1,280 mcg of folic acid a day, past the 1,000 mcg adult upper limit NIH lists for folate from supplements and fortified foods. So pick one, or pair the multi with a simpler biotin product, like our strips: 240 mcg of folic acid each, and no iron.

Key takeaways

  • A hair, skin and nails formula and a multivitamin often list the same vitamins, so the daily total is what counts.
  • Our hair capsule and our multivitamin together list 1,280 mcg of folic acid a day, 280 mcg past the adult upper limit listed by the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements.
  • Of our three biotin hair products, only the Biotin & Horsetail Hair Capsules list iron: 14.5 mg (81% DV) per 2-capsule serving.
  • Our Daily Multivitamin Capsules already list 300 mcg of biotin, ten times the 30 mcg a day adults need, according to NIH.

We sell every product this guide names, including the one pairing we'd tell you to skip. Every product amount below comes off our own Supplement Facts panels, and every limit or daily need comes from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. The method works on any brand's bottles.

Can you take hair, skin and nails vitamins with a multivitamin?

Yes, most adults can take a hair, skin and nails vitamin with a multivitamin, as long as the combined amounts stay under each nutrient's upper limit.

The catch: the two products are closer cousins than their names suggest. Hair formulas often repeat B vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc, and many multis carry those same rows, as ours does. So a second bottle often just doubles what you already take.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) makes this point in its fact sheet on multivitamin/mineral supplements. Its warning: a multi makes it more likely you'll get too much iron, vitamin A, zinc, niacin or folic acid. If you take other supplements, ODS asks you to check that the combination stays under each upper limit.

So the real question is what your two labels add up to.

Hair, skin and nails vitamins vs a multivitamin: how different are they?

Our Biotin & Horsetail Hair Capsules share 14 of their 16 vitamin and mineral rows with our multivitamin, so they behave more like a second multi than an add-on.

Both panels list vitamins A, C, D and E, thiamin, B6, folate, B12, biotin, pantothenic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc and manganese. The capsule's only extras are iron and potassium. The multi adds riboflavin, niacin, selenium, copper, chromium and molybdenum, which makes it the broader formula.

The real gap is biotin. The capsule lists 5,000 mcg (16,667% DV) per 2-capsule serving, while the multi lists 300 mcg (1000% DV).

Both carry herbs, too. The capsule has a 359 mg proprietary blend of 11 ingredients, including horsetail, fo-ti and saw palmetto. The multi has three blends totaling 470 mg. Saw palmetto, stinging nettle and spirulina appear in both, but neither label says how much of each, so you can't total them. (Our guide to horsetail for hair covers that plant on its own.)

What do the totals look like when you stack both?

Together at label doses, our Biotin & Horsetail Hair Capsules and Daily Multivitamin Capsules supply 1,280 mcg of folic acid, 5,300 mcg of biotin and 22 mg of zinc.

Here's the sum, using one serving of each (2 capsules apiece):

Panel rowHair capsuleMultivitaminBoth together
Folic acid880 mcg400 mcg1,280 mcg
Iron14.5 mgNone listed14.5 mg
Biotin5,000 mcg300 mcg5,300 mcg
Zinc7 mg15 mg22 mg
Vitamin B68 mg7.5 mg15.5 mg
Vitamin D20 mcg10 mcg30 mcg
Vitamin A (beta-carotene)120 mcg RAE600 mcg RAE720 mcg RAE

Folic acid is the row that crosses a line. The ODS folate fact sheet lists 1,000 mcg a day as the adult upper limit for folate from supplements and fortified foods and drinks, and says not to exceed it unless a provider recommends it. Our pair lands 280 mcg over before any cereal.

Meals can push it higher, since ODS lists enriched bread, pasta, rice and fortified cereals among foods with added folic acid. It also says large amounts of folate from supplements might hide low vitamin B12.

Our capsule prints folate as "1,496 mcg DFE (880 mcg Folic Acid)." The DFE figure is bigger because, as ODS explains, you absorb folic acid more easily than food folate. To check against the supplement limit, use the folic acid number in parentheses.

Which hair vitamins have iron, and does that change the answer?

Of our three biotin hair products, only the Biotin & Horsetail Hair Capsules list iron: 14.5 mg (81% DV) per 2-capsule serving, as ferrous fumarate.

Our multivitamin lists no iron, so our pair stays at 14.5 mg from supplements. That won't hold for every brand. The ODS iron fact sheet notes that many multivitamin/mineral supplements contain iron. It lists 45 mg a day as the adult upper limit for iron, with food, drinks and supplements all counted.

If your multi has an iron row, add it to the capsule's 14.5 mg, and remember that fortified cereal and meals count too. So does our Collagen Peptides & MCT Creamer (Vanilla), which lists 3 mg of iron (17% DV) per 2-scoop (20 g) serving. For the amounts by age and sex, see how much iron adults need each day.

Here's the capsule's iron warning, copied exactly from its label. The creamer's label carries the same one:

"WARNING: Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under 6. Keep this product out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately."

Want hair vitamins without iron? Our strips and gummies list none, so they're simpler to pair with a multi that has it.

Can you take biotin with a multivitamin?

Yes, you can take biotin with a multivitamin, but read the multi's biotin row first, because our Daily Multivitamin Capsules already list 300 mcg per 2-capsule serving.

The ODS biotin fact sheet puts the adult amount at 30 mcg a day and says most people get enough from food.

Add the 5000 mcg in our 5,000mcg Biotin Strips and the day reaches 5,300 mcg. ODS reports no proven harm from biotin itself, though it warns that amounts above recommended can cause false results on some lab tests. Our rundown of biotin side effects covers what to tell your care team before blood work.

Beyond biotin, the strip's panel has just two rows per 1-strip serving: vitamin D3 at 20 mcg, and folate at 400 mcg DFE, made from 240 mcg of folic acid. Stacked on our multi, that's 640 mcg of folic acid, 30 mcg of vitamin D and no iron.

Pick one, or check the sums: which combination fits you?

For most people, the simplest pattern is one broad formula, either our hair capsule or our multivitamin, plus only products whose shared rows you've already added up.

Only one row crosses the 1,000 mcg limit: the hair capsule with the multi. The rest leave a little room for fortified foods: the hair capsule alone leaves 120 mcg, and the multi-plus-gummy pairing leaves 200 mcg.

The gummies need one more check. Our Biotin & Collagen Gummies get their vitamin A from retinyl acetate, 1200 mcg per 2-gummy serving. That's a different form from the beta-carotene in our multi. If your multi lists retinyl acetate or retinyl palmitate, add the two together.

From our shop: Biotin & Horsetail Hair Capsules — one 2-capsule serving lists 16 vitamins and minerals, including 5,000 mcg of biotin and 14.5 mg of iron, so we'd take it instead of our multivitamin, not alongside it.

How do you take a hair vitamin and a multivitamin together?

Take a hair vitamin and a multivitamin each exactly as its own label directs, and total the shared rows first.

Our labels say, word for word:

  • Daily Multivitamin Capsules: "As a dietary supplement, take two (2) capsules in the morning with a meal."
  • 5,000mcg Biotin Strips: "Place 1 oral strip on the tongue daily and allow it to dissolve."
  • Biotin & Horsetail Hair Capsules: "For adults only. Take two (2) capsules daily."

All three add "Do not exceed recommended dose." Then run this check on every bottle:

  1. List folic acid, iron, vitamin A, zinc, biotin, B6 and vitamin D from each panel.
  2. Keep folic acid from supplements plus fortified foods under 1,000 mcg.
  3. Keep iron, food included, under 45 mg.
  4. Read the parentheses after "Vitamin A" to see whether it's beta-carotene or a retinyl form.

Timing is flexible: the strip and the hair capsule name no time of day, and the multi asks for mornings with a meal.

If your hair formula has iron and your multi has calcium, ODS says calcium might reduce how much iron you absorb, and that taking the two supplements at separate times of day might help. Our own capsule puts 80 mg of calcium in the same serving as its iron, and its label doesn't address timing, so ask your pharmacist.

From our shop: 5,000mcg Biotin Strips — just three rows per strip (biotin, vitamin D3 and folate from 240 mcg of folic acid) and no iron, which keeps the math simple next to a multivitamin.

When don't you need a hair vitamin on top of a multivitamin?

You probably don't need a hair, skin and nails vitamin on top of a multivitamin if your multi already lists biotin and your meals are fairly varied.

ODS is candid here. Its biotin sheet finds "little scientific evidence" for the hair, skin and nails promises made for biotin products, and it calls a true biotin shortfall very rare in the United States.

Its multivitamin sheet adds a twist: multi users often get more vitamins and minerals from their meals than nonusers do. The person stacking a hair formula on a multi may need it least.

You can likely skip the extra bottle if your multi has a biotin row, or if you eat eggs, fish, meat, seeds, nuts or vegetables like spinach most days.

Unsure the multi itself belongs in your day? Our look at who actually benefits from a daily multivitamin helps you decide. The hair, skin and nails collection also has our Collagen Peptides Powders (Unflavored and Chocolate), and their panels list no folic acid, iron or biotin. Our collagen creamer lists 3 mg of iron, so count it.

Who should check with a healthcare provider first?

Get a healthcare provider's okay before pairing a hair vitamin with a multivitamin if you're pregnant, nursing, under 18, on medication, facing surgery or managing any medical condition.

  • Pregnant, trying or nursing. ODS says prenatal multis help supply folic acid and iron, and our hair capsule lists both. All three of our labels ask you to consult a physician.
  • Under 18. The capsule says "For adults only." ODS puts the folate limit for teens 14 to 18 at 800 mcg, which the capsule's 880 mcg passes on its own.
  • On prescription medicine. ODS lists medicines that interact with folate and with iron. Show your pharmacist every bottle.
  • Due for blood work or surgery. Tell the care team about biotin and every other supplement, herbal blends included.
  • Avoiding soy or certain herbs. The capsule contains soy and a blend with fo-ti and saw palmetto. The side-effects guide linked above covers what federal sources say about both herbs.

If any fit, bring both bottles to your next appointment.

FAQ: hair, skin and nails vitamins with a multivitamin

Can you take hair, skin and nails vitamins with prenatal vitamins?

Only with your provider's go-ahead. ODS describes prenatal multivitamins as a way to get enough folic acid and iron, and hair formulas often repeat both. Our Biotin & Horsetail Hair Capsules alone list 880 mcg of folic acid and 14.5 mg of iron per 2-capsule serving. Every one of our hair labels asks you to consult a physician if pregnant or nursing.

Can you take a hair vitamin at night and a multivitamin in the morning?

Yes, if the labels allow it. Our Daily Multivitamin Capsules ask for mornings with a meal, while our Biotin & Horsetail Hair Capsules and 5,000mcg Biotin Strips name no time of day, so an evening hair product fits all three. Splitting them doesn't change the daily total, though.

Does a multivitamin have enough biotin on its own?

If it lists biotin, yes for most adults. ODS lists the adult amount as 30 mcg a day, and our Daily Multivitamin Capsules list 300 mcg per 2-capsule serving. ODS says only some multis contain biotin, so check yours. A separate biotin product adds a far bigger dose, though ODS finds the evidence for biotin's hair, skin and nails claims thin.

Can you add collagen to a hair vitamin and a multivitamin?

Yes, and our Collagen Peptides Powder (Unflavored) adds no folic acid, iron or biotin to the sums. Its panel lists 20 g of hydrolyzed collagen peptides, 18 g of protein and 26 mg of calcium per 1-scoop (20 g) serving. Our collagen creamer is different: it adds 3 mg of iron per 2-scoop serving, so count that with the capsule's 14.5 mg. Both labels ask you to consult a physician first if you're pregnant or nursing, under 18, or have a medical condition.

What should you do if you've been taking both already?

Stop one of them, then add up the rows before deciding which stays. Our hair capsule with our multivitamin works out to 1,280 mcg of folic acid a day from those two alone, above the ODS adult limit. Keep the formula that suits you better, mention biotin before any blood test, and if you have questions about your levels, ask your clinician.
