The four botanicals
Valerian is a flowering plant, Valeriana officinalis, and the root is the part that gets used — that's what's extracted here, at 150mg a serving. It's the ingredient most people picture when they think of a herbal evening blend.
Chamomile is the small daisy-family flower long used in bedtime teas. This is the flower as an extract at 100mg rather than a steeped bag, which means the amount is the same every single night instead of depending on how long you left the cup.
Lemon balm is Melissa officinalis, a mint-family herb with a lemon scent. The extract here draws on the stem, leaves and flower together, at 100mg.
Passion flower rounds the botanicals out at 100mg, also extracted from stem, leaves and flower.
GABA, L-tryptophan and melatonin
GABA is gamma-aminobutyric acid, an amino acid your body also makes on its own. It's here at 100mg, spelled out in full on the panel so there's no guessing at the acronym.
L-Tryptophan is one of the nine essential amino acids — essential meaning your body can't build it and has to take it in from food. Here it's isolated, at 100mg.
Melatonin is a hormone the body makes itself, on a daily rhythm tied to light and dark. This formula carries 2mg per serving, printed plainly on the panel.
How it's taken
Two capsules and you're done. There's no flavor to like or dislike, nothing to shake up, nothing to sweeten. The shell is gelatin and the only other thing in the capsule is brown rice flour. Sixty capsules per bottle works out to thirty nights.
Who it's for
Anyone who'd rather have valerian, chamomile, lemon balm and passion flower in one capsule than four separate bottles crowding a nightstand. Anyone who likes the idea of chamomile but not the idea of boiling a kettle at eleven at night. And anyone who wants the melatonin dose stated plainly: 2mg a serving.
If you're pregnant, nursing or under 18, speak to a physician first — see the caution below.
