About the reishi

Reishi is the glossy, kidney-shaped bracket fungus that grows on hardwood and looks lacquered, like something carved rather than grown. It's known as lingzhi in China, where it appears in art and traditional practice going back centuries, and it's woody enough that nobody has ever cooked one for dinner — it's always been prepared as a tea or an extract.

That's what's here: the panel lists it as Reishi Extract, at 200 mg. It's the largest amount on the panel and the reason this jar carries the name it does.

The four supporting ingredients

L-theanine is an amino acid rather than a botanical, which makes it the odd one out among the four supporting ingredients. It sits at 25 mg, the same as the other three.

The other three are the classic herbal-tea botanicals. Lemon balm is a lemon-scented member of the mint family, grown in gardens for centuries. Passion flower is a climbing vine with a strikingly elaborate flower. Valerian root is the root of a tall flowering plant and a familiar, pungent note in bedtime tea blends.

All four sit at 25 mg apiece. The panel names each one plainly — Lemon Balm, Passion Flower, Valerian Root — without a species name, a plant-part note or an extract ratio, so we won't add one.

How it tastes

Blackberry, from blackberry natural flavour, with citric acid for a little tartness. The colour is listed as color from blackberries. It's set with citrus pectin instead of gelatin, which keeps it vegan, and sweetened with organic cane sugar and tapioca syrup at 2 g of sugar per gummy.

Who it's for

Anyone who already keeps a box of valerian tea by the kettle and would rather not wait for a pot to brew. Anyone curious about reishi who doesn't want to brew a bitter woody tea to get it. Vegans and anyone avoiding gelatin capsules. Anyone building a small evening routine they'll actually keep.

How to use it

Take one (1) to two (2) gummies daily.
