Relaxation Gummies Without THC or CBD

Relaxation gummies without THC or CBD trade hemp for reishi, L-theanine and herbs. Here's how to read the panel, and where our own gummy runs light.

The short answer: Relaxation gummies without THC or CBD skip hemp entirely and use ingredients like reishi mushroom, L-theanine, lemon balm, passionflower, valerian root or magnesium instead. The label is where you check: look for hemp, CBD or THC in the panel and the other-ingredients line. Our Reishi Mushroom Relax Gummies list 200 mg of reishi extract per 1-gummy serving, but only 25 mg each of L-theanine, lemon balm, passion flower and valerian root.

Key takeaways

  • Relaxation gummies without THC or CBD rely on non-hemp ingredients such as reishi, L-theanine, lemon balm, passionflower, valerian root and magnesium.
  • A label shows what a gummy declares, so check both the Supplement Facts panel and the other-ingredients line for hemp, CBD or THC.
  • Our Reishi Mushroom Relax Gummies list 200 mg of reishi extract and 25 mg each of L-theanine, lemon balm, passion flower and valerian root per 1-gummy serving.
  • NCCIH lists drowsiness among passionflower's possible side effects and says valerian shouldn't be taken with alcohol or sedatives.

We sell the reishi gummy this guide is built around, along with the non-hemp drops, strips and capsules it's compared with. Don't take our word for any of it: read the panels alongside us. Product amounts below come from each product's own Supplement Facts panel, and we'll flag the spots where our gummy is weak.

What are relaxation gummies without THC made of?

Relaxation gummies without THC or CBD use mushrooms, amino acids, herbs and minerals, such as reishi, L-theanine, lemon balm, passionflower, valerian root and magnesium, instead of hemp.

Most of the first page for relaxation gummies sells CBD. The non-hemp shelf draws on a shorter list:

  • Reishi, a glossy, woody mushroom from East Asian tradition. Our Reishi Mushroom Relax Gummies lead with it.
  • L-theanine, an amino acid found in tea leaves.
  • Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis), a lemon-scented herb in the mint family.
  • Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata), a climbing vine with white and purple flowers.
  • Valerian root, the root and underground stem of the valerian plant.
  • Magnesium, an essential mineral sold in forms like magnesium glycinate.

Some non-CBD relaxing gummies also add GABA, chamomile or ashwagandha. None of these is a cannabinoid.

What they share is a reputation for winding down, which is softer than proof. None of the federal pages we read shows these ingredients, at gummy-sized amounts, produce a feeling you'll reliably notice. Expect a gentle evening habit, not a switch.

How can you tell if a relaxation gummy lists THC or CBD?

Read a relaxation gummy's Supplement Facts panel and other-ingredients line for hemp, CBD or THC, since a "THC-free" badge alone doesn't tell you whether hemp is inside.

"THC-free" usually sits on a CBD product. It says THC is supposed to be missing, not hemp. NCCIH's page on cannabis and cannabinoids warns that over-the-counter CBD products may hold more or less CBD than their labels state, and may also contain contaminants such as THC.

The same page states: "The FDA has determined that products containing THC or CBD cannot be sold legally as dietary supplements." That's one reason herbal relax gummies and CBD gummies sit in different corners of the market. Still, trust the ingredient list over the front of the box, knowing it shows what's declared, not what a lab would find.

Scan every row and the fine print below it for these words:

Words on the labelWhat they point toLists a cannabinoid?
CBD, cannabidiol, CBD isolateCannabidiol from hempYes
Hemp extract, full- or broad-spectrum hempA hemp-derived extractYes
THC, delta-8, delta-9, "THC-free"THC, or a CBD product said to lack itYes
CBN, CBG, "cannabinoids"Other compounds from the cannabis plantYes
Only mushrooms, amino acids, herbs, mineralsNo hemp or cannabinoid listedNo

If every active ingredient is a mushroom, amino acid, herb or mineral, and the other-ingredients line never mentions hemp, the label lists no cannabinoids.

We won't make drug-test promises for any supplement, ours included. What we can tell you is that our gummy's label lists no hemp, CBD or THC.

What's in our Reishi Mushroom Relax Gummies, row by row?

Our Reishi Mushroom Relax Gummies list 200 mg of reishi extract per 1-gummy serving, plus 25 mg each of L-theanine, lemon balm, passion flower and valerian root.

The full panel for one gummy:

  • 10 calories, 3 g of carbohydrate and 2 g of sugars, all of it added (4% of the Daily Value).
  • Reishi Extract, 200 mg. The panel doesn't name the mushroom part or the extract's strength.
  • L-Theanine, Lemon Balm, Passion Flower and Valerian Root, 25 mg each. The panel doesn't say whether the herbs are extracts or dried plant.
  • Other ingredients: organic cane sugar, tapioca syrup, purified water, citrus pectin, citric acid, blackberry natural flavor, sodium citrate and color from blackberries.

The reishi carries this formula, and the other four rows are small. Valerian shows why. NCCIH's valerian page says it has been used "with apparent safety in doses of 300 to 600 milligrams daily for up to 6 weeks." That's a safety range, not a recommended amount.

Because our panel doesn't say whether its valerian is extract or dried root, the 25 mg per 1-gummy serving can't be set side by side with that range. Either way, valerian is a small entry on this panel, not something to buy the gummy for. The same goes for the lemon balm, passion flower and L-theanine, which reach just 50 mg each at two gummies, the label's maximum.

On the plus side, the label carries vegan, gluten-free and non-GMO claims, and citrus pectin sets the gummy, so gelatin isn't on the list.

For the mushroom's own safety picture, our guide to reishi side effects covers what NIH sources say.

Lemon balm, passion flower and valerian root: why are they grouped?

Lemon balm, passion flower and valerian root show up together because evening formulas treat them as a set, though each herb comes with its own cautions.

If one of them already doesn't agree with you, a blend holding all three isn't your gummy.

Passionflower

NCCIH's passionflower page describes it as a climbing vine native to the southeastern United States and Central and South America. It says passionflower's effects haven't been studied extensively. It lists drowsiness, dizziness and confusion as possible side effects, and says it should not be used during pregnancy.

Valerian root

NCCIH says valerian's roots and rhizomes (underground stems) are the parts used. Its listed side effects include headache, stomach upset, mental dullness, excitability, uneasiness and vivid dreams, and long-term safety is unknown. Our valerian root safety guide walks through each one.

Lemon balm

None of the pages we cite covers lemon balm as a supplement, so we won't claim anything for it. One label detail stands out, though. Our gummy's panel just says "Lemon Balm," while our Valerian & Chamomile Sleep Capsules print the botanical name, Melissa officinalis, and the parts used. When a panel spells out the species and plant part, you have more to go on.

Which non-hemp relax option fits you?

Pick the Reishi Mushroom Relax Gummies for reishi plus herbs, the Reishi Mushroom Calm Drops for reishi without herbs, the strips for L-theanine, or the magnesium capsules for a mineral.

Product (serving)What the panel listsLabel's suggested useWorth knowing
Reishi Mushroom Relax Gummies (1 gummy)200 mg reishi extract; 25 mg each of L-theanine, lemon balm, passion flower, valerian root1 to 2 gummies daily2 g added sugars
Reishi Mushroom Calm Drops (1 ml)150 mg reishi mushroom extract; 50 mg proprietary mushroom blend1 ml (30 drops) dailyNo herbs; stevia
L-Theanine & GABA Calm Strips (1 strip)50 mg L-theanine (green tea), 25 mg GABA, 6 mg vitamin B61 strip dailyNo herbs or mushrooms
Magnesium Glycinate Capsules (3 capsules)275 mg magnesium from 2,500 mg magnesium glycinate3 capsules once daily65% of the Daily Value

Of these four, the gummy is the only one with the herbal trio, and the only one with sugar on its panel. If you want to avoid passionflower or valerian, the drops keep the reishi and leave out the herbs, adding a 50 mg blend of chaga, reishi, maitake, shiitake and turkey tail instead. The L-Theanine & GABA Calm Strips skip mushrooms and herbs alike, with double the gummy's L-theanine per serving.

You'll find all four in our Sleep & Stress Relief collection.

From our shop: Reishi Mushroom Relax Gummies — 200 mg of reishi extract plus 25 mg each of L-theanine, lemon balm, passion flower and valerian root per 1-gummy serving, in a blackberry gummy labeled vegan, gluten free and non-GMO.

Is a magnesium calm gummy different from an herbal one?

A magnesium calm gummy differs from an herbal one: magnesium has an NIH upper limit for supplements, while herbs like passionflower carry their own safety cautions instead.

Plenty of gummies sold for calm are really magnesium gummies. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements' magnesium fact sheet says magnesium helps regulate muscle and nerve function. The sheet's upper limit for adults is 350 mg a day, counting only magnesium from supplements and medications, not food. High intakes from those sources can cause diarrhea, nausea and abdominal cramping, ODS says.

Our Magnesium Glycinate Capsules list 275 mg per 3-capsule serving, under that limit alone. Add a magnesium calm gummy or powder on top, though, and you need to total the rows first.

How do you take a relaxation gummy, going by the label?

Take our Reishi Mushroom Relax Gummies as labeled, one to two gummies daily, and start with one so you learn how the passion flower and valerian sit with you.

  1. Start at one gummy. The label says "Do not exceed recommended dose."
  2. Try your first one at home, at a time you won't need to drive. The label names no time of day, but NCCIH ties passionflower to drowsiness and dizziness.
  3. Don't pair it with alcohol. NCCIH advises against taking valerian with alcohol or sedatives.
  4. Count every valerian and passionflower source. Our Valerian & Chamomile Sleep Capsules list 150 mg of valerian extract, 100 mg of passion flower extract and 2 mg of melatonin per 2-capsule serving. They're a bedtime product, so pick one rather than doubling up.
  5. Budget your bottle. Its 30 gummies last a month at one a day, or 15 days at two.

From our shop: L-Theanine & GABA Calm Strips — 50 mg of L-theanine from green tea, 25 mg of GABA and 6 mg of vitamin B6 per 1-strip serving, in a strawberry-peppermint strip labeled vegan and gluten free, with no valerian or passion flower on the panel.

When don't you need a relaxation gummy at all?

You don't need a relaxation gummy if your evenings already settle, if a fixable habit is the real problem, or if you're after the feel of a THC edible.

  • Late coffee, a late screen and a to-do list carried to bed cost nothing to change, and no gummy outruns them.
  • A botanical gummy isn't built to feel like a cannabis edible, and our label doesn't promise that.
  • If you're cutting added sugar, the strips and drops list none on their panels.

If stress has stretched on for weeks and is spilling into your sleep or work, talk to a healthcare provider rather than reaching for another supplement.

Who should check with a healthcare provider first?

Talk to a healthcare provider before starting a relaxation gummy if you're pregnant or nursing, under 18, on prescription medicine, heading into surgery or living with a medical condition.

The caution printed on all four labels here covers pregnancy, nursing, under-18s and anyone with a medical condition. For the herbs in the gummy, NCCIH gets more specific:

  • Pregnancy: passionflower should not be used, and little is known about valerian during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Surgery: talk to your provider if you're taking passionflower within 2 weeks of a scheduled surgery.
  • Sedatives or alcohol: valerian shouldn't be combined with either.
  • Liver: very rare liver injury reports exist with valerian, most often alongside other herbs, so ask first if a provider monitors your liver.

On a prescription? Tell your pharmacist which of these products you're weighing. ODS notes magnesium supplements can interact with some medicines, and antibiotics might not be absorbed if taken too soon before or after one.

FAQ: relaxation gummies without THC

Will relaxation gummies without THC get you high?

Our relaxation gummy's label lists no hemp, CBD or THC. NCCIH says THC is the substance primarily responsible for marijuana's effects on a person's mental state. That doesn't mean it does nothing. NCCIH lists drowsiness, dizziness and confusion as possible passionflower side effects, and mental dullness among valerian's. Try a new gummy at home, and don't drive until you know how it affects you.

Do calm gummies help with sleep?

Not by design: our Reishi Mushroom Relax Gummies are labeled a "Calm & Relaxation Support Formula," not a sleep formula, and NCCIH says the evidence on valerian for sleep is inconsistent. The panel lists no melatonin either, though other calm gummies sometimes add it. For a sleep-focused look at options, see our honest buying guide to melatonin-free sleep aids.

How many relaxation gummies can you take a day?

Our relaxation gummy label allows one to two gummies daily and says "Do not exceed recommended dose." Two gummies add up to 400 mg of reishi extract, 50 mg each of L-theanine, lemon balm, passion flower and valerian root, and 4 g of added sugars. If one feels like enough, skip the second. Other brands set their own servings.

Can kids take relaxation gummies?

Not without a pediatrician's OK: our relaxation gummy label tells anyone under 18 to consult a physician first. Calming gummies are marketed for kids, but herbs like passionflower and valerian carry the side effects covered above. Ask your child's pediatrician before trying any brand.

Can you drink alcohol with relaxation gummies?

Skip alcohol with any relaxation gummy that contains valerian root, ours included. NCCIH says valerian shouldn't be taken with alcohol or sedatives, because it's possible it has a sleep-inducing effect. Passionflower, also in our gummy, can cause drowsiness on its own. Want a drink tonight? Save the gummy for another day.
