The two amino acids
L-citrulline is an amino acid first isolated from watermelon — Citrullus lanatus, which is exactly where the name came from. L-arginine is an amino acid as well, one that occurs in nuts, seeds, legumes and meat, and one of the most commonly sold amino acids on its own.
They're close chemical relatives. Line the two side chains up and they differ by a single group: citrulline carries a ureido group where arginine carries a guanidino group. That family resemblance is why you so often see the two sold together rather than one or the other.
Why three forms and not one
Amino acids are rarely packed as the bare molecule. They're bound to a partner that makes them a stable, measurable powder, and the panel names the partner every time.
- DL-Malate — citrulline paired with malic acid, the tart acid in green apples, as a salt. "DL" means both mirror-image forms of that acid are present.
- Hydrochloride — arginine as its HCl salt, the standard crystalline form for capsules and powders.
- Alpha-Ketoglutarate — arginine bound to alpha-ketoglutaric acid, a five-carbon acid from the citric acid cycle. You'll see it abbreviated AAKG on most labels.

Two capsules daily with 6-8 oz of water. Capsules mean there's no flavor to like or dislike — no sour blue-raspberry powder, nothing to dissolve, nothing sweetened, and no sticky scoop.
