When to Take Exogenous Ketones (BHB)

When to take exogenous ketones if you also fast or take iron: our BHB capsules carry MCT powder and 146 mg of calcium, and both shape the right slot.

The short answer: When to take exogenous ketones comes down to your routine, because the label on our BHB Ketone Capsules names no time of day. Morning, a meal, before training or evening all fit its two-capsule daily serving. The one timing rule we'd add comes from the panel's 146 mg of calcium: keep the capsules away from an iron supplement.

Key takeaways

  • Nothing on the BHB Ketone Capsules label calls for an empty stomach, so taking the 2-capsule serving with a meal is a fine way to make it a daily habit.
  • Each 2-capsule serving carries 146 mg of calcium, so the NIH's advice to keep calcium and iron supplements apart in your day applies to it.
  • The panel prints no Calories row, yet the blend holds MCT powder and BHB salts, so whether the capsules break a fast depends on the rules you fast by.
  • The label's answer to how much BHB per day is one serving: two capsules holding an 800 mg blend, with no separate BHB figure printed.

Full disclosure: we sell both products this guide points to, the BHB capsules and the lemonade electrolyte mix. Where the capsule label leaves timing open, we flag the gap instead of inventing a best hour, and outside facts come from NIH, FDA and federal-regulation pages, plus two published studies.

When should you take exogenous ketones?

Take exogenous ketones at a time you'll repeat every day, because the BHB Ketone Capsules label sets an amount and a glass of water but no hour.

Here's the full suggested use from the label: "As a dietary supplement, adults take two (2) capsules daily. For best results, take with 6-8 oz (177-237ml) of water or as directed by healthcare professional."

Some ketone sellers pin their products to sunrise or pre-gym windows. The research in our look at whether exogenous ketones work looked at blood BHB and sports performance after drinks holding grams of BHB, about 12 to 24 g in a 2017 study. None of it compared hours of the day, or used anything as small as two capsules.

What matters is a fixed slot. It makes the capsules easy to remember once and hard to take twice, and the caution line leaves no wiggle room: "Do not exceed recommended dose."

With dinner or at nightYesA calcium pill alongsideEvenings are your supplement time

Every row is a yes, because the label leaves the hour to you. The real decisions sit in the "what to watch" column: two come down to calcium, and one to how you define a fast.

Should you take keto BHB before a workout?

You can take keto BHB before a workout, since the BHB Ketone Capsules label names no time of day, but don't expect two capsules to change how you train.

Training is a favorite slot in ketone marketing, and the evidence hasn't kept up. A 2020 review covered in our ketone explainer found insufficient evidence for ketone supplements in sports, based on drinks with grams of BHB.

So the case for a pre-workout slot is habit: if you train at 6 every evening, tying the capsules to your gym bag makes them easy to remember. That's a scheduling reason, not a performance one.

These capsules also aren't a sweat-replacement product: their sodium and magnesium rows read 1 mg each per 2-capsule serving. For minerals in your training water, our Electrolyte Hydration Powder (Lemonade) is built for the job, mixed at 1 scoop per 14 to 20 fl oz of water.

Can you take exogenous ketones at night?

Yes, you can take exogenous ketones at night: the BHB Ketone Capsules label names no time, and no caffeine source appears anywhere on the panel.

Some brands warn against ketones near bedtime because of an "energy boost." Our label claims no energy effect, so we see no label-based reason to avoid evenings. That isn't a sleep claim: BHB isn't a sleep aid.

The better evening question is what else you take at night. If that includes a calcium supplement, the capsules' 146 mg joins the dose, and the NIH has a view on how much calcium to take at once (see below).

Do exogenous ketones break a fast?

Exogenous ketones break a water-only fast, since BHB Ketone Capsules contain fat and a fuel your body uses. Whether they break a looser fast depends on your plan's rules.

Start with what's in the bottle:

  • MCT powder, second in the 800 mg blend: a powdered form of medium-chain triglycerides, which are fats.
  • Calcium, magnesium and sodium BHB, which supply beta-hydroxybutyrate, a ketone body your cells can burn for energy.
  • Gelatin, the capsule shell, which is a protein.
  • Brown rice flour, which is mostly starch.

Then there's the missing Calories row. The FDA's Dietary Supplement Labeling Guide says calories and total fat must be listed when present in measurable amounts, meaning more than a food label could round to zero. It also bars "zero" amounts from a Supplement Facts panel.

The food labeling rule, 21 CFR 101.9, supplies the cutoffs: fewer than 5 calories may be expressed as zero, and less than 0.5 g of fat is expressed as zero. If the supplier's panel follows those rules, the missing rows mean a 2-capsule serving has under 5 calories and under 0.5 g of fat. We haven't measured it.

Which answer applies depends on how you define your fast:

  • Water only: the capsules are out, because they contain things your body digests.
  • A small calorie allowance: the label gives no calorie figure, and if its panel follows the FDA rules above, a serving comes in under 5.
  • A daily eating window: the amounts are tiny, but fat and a gelatin shell are still food, so the cleanest move is to take the capsules when you eat.

You may read that BHB can't break a fast because your body makes it while fasting. A fast is defined by what you take in, though, and we make no claim that the capsules deepen one.

When should you take exogenous ketones while intermittent fasting?

When intermittent fasting, take exogenous ketones with the first meal of your eating window. That follows the BHB Ketone Capsules label and sidesteps the break-a-fast question.

The label never asks for an empty stomach, which makes this easy. Part of the capsules' calcium comes from calcium citrate, and according to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements calcium fact sheet, calcium citrate is absorbed well on an empty or a full stomach.

Here's how that looks if you eat between noon and 8 p.m.:

  1. Noon: two capsules with 6 to 8 oz of water, alongside lunch.
  2. Rest of the window: nothing more from the bottle, because one serving covers the day.
  3. From 8 p.m.: water only until tomorrow's window opens.

Train fasted and eat right after? Take the capsules with that meal. Our guide to timing fat burners by the label takes the same approach with MCT Oil & L-Carnitine Capsules and Raspberry Ketone & Green Tea Capsules, whose labels do tie the dose to meals.

From our shop: Electrolyte Hydration Powder (Lemonade) — 40 mg of calcium per 1-scoop (5.4 g) serving, plus seven B vitamins at 33% DV apiece, so it can share a time slot with the BHB capsules.

Should you space BHB capsules from calcium or iron supplements?

Yes. Space BHB Ketone Capsules from iron supplements and large calcium doses, because each 2-capsule serving carries 146 mg of calcium (11% DV).

Two points from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) apply:

  • Calcium is absorbed best in amounts of 500 mg or less at one time, per the ODS calcium fact sheet.
  • Calcium might interfere with iron absorption. The ODS iron fact sheet says splitting the two supplements across different times of day might get around that.

An iron supplementNot the concernDifferent times of day

Small calcium sources can share a slot, while a full calcium pill or any iron pill belongs at a different time of day. If your iron comes with breakfast, move the capsules to dinner.

Medicines count too. ODS lists several that shouldn't be taken close to a calcium supplement, with gaps of 2 hours or more in its examples, so ask your pharmacist where the capsules fit. Our calcium carbonate vs citrate breakdown explains why the form of calcium changes its food timing.

From our shop: BHB Ketone Capsules — 60 gelatin capsules, two a day with 6 to 8 oz of water and no set hour, carrying 146 mg of calcium per 2-capsule serving.

How much BHB per day, and how should you take it?

The BHB Ketone Capsules label calls for one serving per day: two capsules holding an 800 mg Keto Proprietary Blend, taken with 6 to 8 oz of water.

No line on the panel isolates the BHB. Its 800 mg figure covers all five blend ingredients, and calcium citrate and MCT powder are listed ahead of the three salts. The ceiling our explainer works out for the BHB share sits far below that total.

To take the capsules the way the label describes:

  1. Pick one daily slot from the first table, and keep it.
  2. Swallow both capsules together with 6 to 8 oz (177 to 237 ml) of water. The label counts the pair as one serving and doesn't mention splitting it.
  3. Take one serving a day at most, as the caution line requires.
  4. Let a missed day go; the label has no catch-up dose.
  5. Store the bottle in a cool, dry place, and don't use it if the safety seal is damaged or missing.

At a serving a day, the 60-capsule bottle's 30 servings run 30 days. Anyone avoiding animal-derived foods should know the capsule shell is gelatin.

Who can skip BHB capsules altogether?

You can skip BHB Ketone Capsules if you were hoping the right hour would get more out of them, because nothing on the label links any result to a time of day.

Two routines make them a poor fit, too. If you fast on water alone most days, there's no meal for the capsules to ride along with. And if your day already juggles an iron pill, a calcium pill and medicines your pharmacist wants spaced from calcium, one more thing to time can crowd the schedule.

Labels across our weight-support range differ here: some tie the dose to meals, while this one leaves the hour to you.

Who should check with a healthcare provider first?

Run BHB Ketone Capsules past a healthcare provider before you start them if you're pregnant or nursing, under 18, on medication, managing a medical condition or facing surgery.

That talk often turns to timing:

  • Prescriptions taken at set hours: ODS names medicines that need distance from calcium, so build the capsule slot around your pharmacist's answer.
  • A fasting blood draw or procedure: mention the capsules when it's booked, and plan that day's serving for after you're done.
  • An operation coming up: ask the surgeon's office whether the capsules should stop in the days before it.
  • A touchy stomach: our guide to digestive complaints tied to ketone salts covers what the research reports.
  • Your calcium total: add the capsules' 146 mg to your food and other supplements, then check the sum against the ODS upper limit for your age (2,000 mg a day from 51 on, 2,500 mg for younger adults).

FAQ: exogenous ketone timing

Should you take exogenous ketones with food or on an empty stomach?

Either works for BHB Ketone Capsules, because the label names no meal. Its only condition is 6 to 8 oz of water. Part of the calcium in the capsules comes from calcium citrate, which the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements says is absorbed well on an empty or a full stomach. If the capsules sit poorly without food, try them with a meal; ODS lists that as one fix for gas or bloating from calcium supplements.

Can you take exogenous ketones every day?

Yes, BHB Ketone Capsules are labeled for daily use at two capsules a day, and no more. That doesn't mean months of daily ketone supplements are well studied. Our explainer on what ketone research does and doesn't show notes that research on weeks of daily use is sparse. Planning to stay on them for months? Raise it at your next checkup.

What if you forget to take your BHB capsules?

If you forget your BHB capsules, take the serving later that day as long as it won't land on top of an iron supplement, or skip the day. Don't take four capsules tomorrow to catch up, since the caution line caps the day at one serving.

Can you take exogenous ketones while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Not without your healthcare provider's OK: the BHB Ketone Capsules label asks anyone pregnant or nursing to consult a physician. Take the whole Supplement Facts panel to that appointment, including the 146 mg of calcium per 2-capsule serving and the five-ingredient 800 mg blend. If your prenatal vitamin contains iron, ask where the capsules belong in your day, too.

Can you take BHB capsules with an electrolyte drink?

Yes, BHB capsules and an electrolyte drink can share a time slot, as long as each follows its own label. The BHB label asks for 6 to 8 oz of water with the capsules. Electrolyte Hydration Powder (Lemonade) takes 1 scoop per 14 to 20 fl oz of water, up to 5 scoops daily. One serving of each adds up to 186 mg of calcium.
