  • L-Lysine 100 mg

The botanicals

Elderberry is the dark purple fruit of Sambucus nigra, the European elder. Here it's a fruit extract at 500 mg per serving, the largest amount on the panel.

Echinacea purpurea is purple coneflower, a North American prairie plant. This is a whole plant extract at 200 mg — the whole plant, as the panel states it, rather than one isolated fraction.

Alongside them sit two more: Citrus Bioflavonoid 50% at 100 mg, which the panel names with its 50% grade as part of the ingredient name, and L-Lysine at 100 mg, one of the nine essential amino acids — essential meaning the body can't make it and has to take it in.

The vitamins and the zinc

The four vitamins are all named by their exact chemical form, which is the detail worth reading on any label. Vitamin C is ascorbic acid, water-soluble, at 180 mg or twice the Daily Value. Vitamin D3 is cholecalciferol, the same form skin makes in sunlight, at 40 mcg. Vitamin E is d-alpha tocopheryl acetate — that leading "d-" marks the natural-source isomer rather than the synthetic "dl-". Vitamin B6 is pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, the coenzyme form, at 1.7 mg. The zinc is 11 mg, as zinc citrate — a full Daily Value.

How it's taken

Two capsules a day with 6-8 oz of water, no flavour to get past and nothing to mix. Worth knowing before you order: the capsule shell is gelatin and the filler is brown rice flour, so this one isn't vegetarian. If that matters to you, it's better to know now.

Who it's for

People who keep an elderberry supplement in the cupboard and would rather it came with the echinacea and the zinc already in it. Handy for travel, and for anyone tired of a shelf full of half-used bottles. Two capsules, thirty days.

How to use it

As a dietary supplement, adults take two (2) capsules daily. For best results, take with 6-8 oz (177-237ml) of water or as directed by healthcare professional.

What's in it

Gelatin (capsule), Brown Rice Flour.
