The short answer: The best-documented of the gymnema sylvestre benefits happens in your mouth. Gymnemic acids from the leaf latch onto the sweet receptors on your tongue, so sugary foods taste flat for a while. That only works when gymnema touches your tongue, as a tea, a chewed leaf or a mint. A capsule you swallow whole skips your taste buds, and that includes the two Betterly capsules with gymnema on the label.
Key takeaways
- Gymnema sylvestre's clearest effect is a short-lived dulling of sweet taste that leaves salty, sour, bitter and savory flavors alone.
- In a 2020 study of 56 adults, people ate about 21% fewer chocolate bars after a gymnema mint than after a placebo mint.
- In a 14-day trial of gymnema mints, the gymnema and placebo groups ate about the same amount of chocolate by day 15, and everyday food intake never differed.
- Both trials used mints that dissolve on the tongue, so their results don't carry over to swallowed capsules, ours included.
Two Betterly capsules list gymnema, and we don't sell a gymnema tea, loose leaf or mint. So this post argues format matters while our own products use the one format the taste studies skipped. Each Betterly figure below comes straight off that product's Supplement Facts panel.
What is gymnema sylvestre?
Gymnema sylvestre is a large vine whose leaves are used in India's Ayurvedic tradition, and it's best known for making sweet things taste less sweet for a while.
In Hindi it's called gurmar. A 2020 gymnema study in the journal Nutrients explains that the leaf earned that name, often rendered as "sugar destroyer," because of what it does to taste.
The compounds doing the work are plant chemicals called gymnemic acids. The same paper notes that chewing the leaves or brewing them into tea gives a temporary, reversible dulling of sweetness.
The leaf is sold as tea, powder, extracts, mints and multi-ingredient capsules. Both of ours are capsules, led by our Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules, and the format changes what gymnema can do.
What are the real gymnema sylvestre benefits?
The best-supported gymnema sylvestre benefit is a temporary drop in how sweet food tastes, caused by gymnemic acids sitting on your tongue's sweet receptors.
The paper behind a 14-day gymnema trial, also in Nutrients, lays out the mechanism. Gymnemic acids bind to two sweet-taste receptors, called T1R2 and T1R3, on the tongue and the roof of the mouth, so sugar molecules can't bind there. The authors say the effect generally lasts 30 to 60 minutes.
It's also picky. The 2020 paper says gymnemic acids mute sweet responses without changing salty, sour, bitter or umami (savory) tastes.
Other uses you'll see online involve medical conditions, which no supplement may claim to address. Does gymnema work, then? For how sweet things taste in the half hour to hour after it's been on your tongue, yes.
Does gymnema help with sugar cravings?
Gymnema mints made chocolate less pleasant right after they dissolved in two small trials, and by day 15 of the longer one, the placebo group's intake had fallen to match.
The 2020 study tested 56 healthy adults. Each ate a serving of their favorite chocolate, let a mint dissolve on the tongue, then was offered more. The first visit always used a placebo mint with the same calories, and the second a mint with 4 mg of gymnemic acids. After the gymnema mint, people ate 0.48 fewer bars, about 21% less, and rated the chocolate 31% less pleasant. Hunger didn't change.
The authors flagged the single-blind design, the fixed order and too few men. They also noted that a lab test with one food can't show everyday eating.
In the 14-day trial, 58 adults took either a placebo mint or a mint with 4 mg of gymnema (75% gymnemic acids), three times a day between meals or when craving sweets. The gymnema group also took a daily vitamin-and-fiber powder (it included chromium) and followed one healthy-eating guide. The placebo group got a placebo powder and a different guide, so the trial tested a whole package, not gymnema alone.
- At the first lab visit, the gymnema group ate fewer chocolate bars after a mint (2.65 vs 3.15).
- By day 15, the gymnema group's intake had held steady (2.77) while the placebo group's fell to 2.78, a drop the authors credit to simply being in the study.
- Pleasantness was lower after the gymnema mint at both visits, desire only at the first, and the authors saw no sign the mint wore off.
- Intake across nine food categories didn't differ between groups at any point.
Gymnema changed how chocolate tasted in the moment, not what people ate across a normal day. Chromium gets pitched for the same job, and our review of chromium for sugar cravings covers that ingredient's own trial.
Does the form change gymnema sylvestre benefits?
Yes, the form decides whether the taste effect can happen at all, because gymnema has to reach your tongue: tea, chewed leaf and mints can, and swallowed capsules can't.
| Form | Reaches your taste buds? | What the label can tell you | Fits someone who |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tea or loose leaf | Yes, as you sip | Grams of leaf per bag | Wants to try the taste effect at home |
| Chewed leaf or leaf powder | Yes | Grams of ground leaf | Wants the least-processed form |
| Mint or lozenge | Yes, as it dissolves | Milligrams of gymnemic acids per piece | Wants the format the trials used |
| Swallowed capsule | No | Milligrams, extract %, blend order | Wants gymnema inside a daily formula |
The takeaway: for the taste effect, pick a form that dissolves or steeps on its way past your tongue.
How does gymnema tea work?
Gymnema tea works like a mint: gymnemic acids steep out of the leaf into hot water, and each sip coats your tongue with them.
What you can't know is your cup's strength. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes in its overview of botanical supplements that teas, tinctures and extracts differ in strength, so the same amount of plant can land very differently. Neither trial here tested tea, so its strength is guesswork.
Why can't a gymnema capsule do the same thing?
A gymnema capsule is swallowed whole, so its contents never sit on your taste buds, and the gymnemic acids never reach the tongue's sweet-taste receptors.
Neither trial tested capsules. The 2022 authors warned that a mint chewed or swallowed, rather than dissolved, might block the tongue's sweet receptors less. Both Betterly gymnema products run into that same wall: they offer gymnema leaf as one ingredient in a daily formula, not the tongue effect.
What is gymnema extract, and what does "25% extract" mean?
Gymnema extract is leaf steeped in water, alcohol or another liquid to draw its compounds out, and it can then be dried to fill capsules or tablets.
That definition comes from the same ODS botanical sheet. Leaf powder is simpler: dried, ground leaf, nothing concentrated. So powder and extract aren't the same material.
A percentage after an extract is often a standardization claim. In the ODS sheet's terms, the maker picks marker chemicals, measures them, and tweaks every batch until the levels line up. The sheet adds that supplements aren't required by U.S. law to be standardized, and the word has no legal definition here, so "standardized" alone doesn't prove quality.
Our MCT Oil & L-Carnitine Capsules list "Gymnema sylvestre Leaf (25% extract)" at 25 mg per 4-capsule serving. Nothing on the panel names the compound behind that 25%. If it means gymnemic acids, that's about 6 mg per serving, or roughly 3 mg in each 2-capsule dose.
That's near the 2020 study's 4 mg mint, but the mint sat on the tongue and these capsules go straight down.
How much gymnema is in Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules?
Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules don't print a gymnema amount: the leaf powder is fourth among 11 ingredients sharing one 620 mg blend per 2-capsule serving.
Blend ingredients are listed heaviest first, and our walkthrough on proprietary blend labels shows how that order caps each one. Gymnema sits behind bitter melon extract, cassia cinnamon bark and deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) extract, so it can't outweigh any of them. The most it could be is a quarter of the blend, 155 mg, and it may hold far less. Seven more follow it, from banaba leaf extract to juniper berry powder.
The fixed numbers sit outside the blend: 148 mcg of chromium (as chromium amino acid chelate, 420% DV) and 600 mcg of biotin (2000% DV) per 2-capsule serving, plus vitamins C and E, magnesium, zinc and manganese.
| Product, serving | Gymnema line on the panel | Amount shown | Touches your tongue? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules, 2 capsules | Leaf powder inside a 620 mg blend | Not listed, 155 mg at most | No |
| MCT Oil & L-Carnitine Capsules, 4 capsules | Leaf, 25% extract | 25 mg | No |
| Saffron & Chromium Appetite Strips, 1 strip | None | None | Yes, but no gymnema |
Only one Betterly label gives gymnema its own number, and it isn't the one with gymnema in the name. Our one weight-support product that dissolves on the tongue, the Saffron & Chromium Appetite Strips, has no gymnema at all. All three sit in our Weight Support collection.
From our shop: Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules — gymnema leaf powder inside a 620 mg, 11-ingredient blend, plus 600 mcg of biotin and 148 mcg of chromium per 2-capsule serving, labeled non-GMO.
How do you take gymnema capsules, per the label?
Take gymnema capsules exactly as each label directs: 2 Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules daily with water, or 4 MCT Oil & L-Carnitine Capsules daily with meals.
- Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules: "adults take two (2) capsules daily," with 6-8 oz of water. The label doesn't name a time of day.
- MCT Oil & L-Carnitine Capsules: "Take 4 capsules daily with meals." The label then suggests a split: 2 capsules with water before breakfast and 2 more before dinner.
Then keep three rules in mind:
- Don't open a capsule to taste the powder. Neither label directs it.
- Choose one product, not both. Together they'd give you 348 mcg of chromium a day, and our look at daily chromium needs versus label amounts shows how far past the Daily Value that runs. Both blends also list cassia cinnamon and juniper berry.
- Don't add a capsule on a heavy-dessert day. Each label prints "Do not exceed recommended dose."
From our shop: MCT Oil & L-Carnitine Capsules — our only panel with a separate gymnema row, listing 25 mg of a 25% gymnema leaf extract per 4-capsule serving, alongside 200 mcg of chromium and 500 mg of inositol.
When don't you need a gymnema supplement?
You probably don't need a gymnema capsule if you're after the sweet-taste effect, already get chromium elsewhere, or want to judge gymnema on its own.
- You want sweets to taste less sweet. No capsule can, ours included. A mint matches the trials, and a tea also reaches your tongue, though no trial here tested one. We sell neither.
- You already take chromium. Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules add 148 mcg per serving on top of a multivitamin or other formula.
- You want to test gymnema by itself. Both of ours are blends.
A gymnema capsule can still make sense, but buy it for the whole formula, not the taste effect.
Who should check with a healthcare provider first?
Check with a healthcare provider before taking gymnema if you're pregnant, nursing or under 18, take prescription medicine, have surgery coming up, or manage any medical condition.
Both of our gymnema labels print the same caution: "Do not exceed recommended dose. Consult a physician if pregnant, nursing, under 18, or have a medical condition." Two label details add to that:
- Biotin and lab work: the ODS biotin fact sheet lists 30 mcg daily as the recommended amount for adults, and it warns that biotin above recommended amounts may skew some lab tests, thyroid hormone tests among them. Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules hold 600 mcg per 2-capsule serving, so mention them before any blood draw.
- Allergens and capsules: the MCT Oil & L-Carnitine label lists fish and shellfish under "Contains," and both products use gelatin capsules.

FAQ: gymnema sylvestre
Is gymnema the same as gynostemma?
No, gymnema and gynostemma are different plants whose names just look alike. Gymnema sylvestre is the Ayurvedic leaf known for muting sweet taste. Gynostemma pentaphyllum is a separate species with its own scientific name. Because the two are easy to mix up, check the Latin name printed on any label before you buy.
How long does gymnema's effect on sweet taste last?
Gymnema's effect on sweet taste is temporary. The 2022 Nutrients trial describes it as generally lasting 30 to 60 minutes, and the 2020 study gave the same range for one mint, based on the mint maker's guidance. Afterward, sweetness tastes normal again. Our capsule labels set no time frame, since capsules never touch your tongue.
Does gymnema work differently for men and women?
Mostly no, though the 2020 gymnema study did find one small difference. Men and women ate about the same amount of chocolate after the gymnema mint and wanted more about equally, but women rated it somewhat less pleasant. Men made up only about 36% of that study and 33% of the 2022 trial, which the 2020 authors called a limitation. That's too thin to back a men's or women's version.
Can you take gymnema and chromium together?
Yes, gymnema and chromium are often paired, and our Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules combine them with 148 mcg of chromium per 2-capsule serving. The 2022 trial's gymnema group also took a powder with chromium, but that design can't show what either did alone, so the pairing isn't proof of anything extra. The practical check is your chromium total, since a multivitamin or second formula can push it well past the Daily Value.
Is it safe to take gymnema every day?
The sources we cite hold no long-term safety data on daily gymnema, and the longer of the two trials here ran just 14 days. So take the label's daily amount as a ceiling, not a guarantee, and stop and call a healthcare provider if something feels off.
