How Much Chromium Per Day? Needs vs Labels

How much chromium per day do adults need? ODS lists 20 to 35 mcg, yet one of our servings holds 200. We add up our labels and decode the % DV.

The short answer: Adults need very little chromium per day, and the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) lists no upper limit for it. ODS does call 20 to 45 mcg a day safe for adults and links larger amounts to side effects. Its adult recommended amounts, set in 2001, run from 20 to 35 mcg by age and sex. Our own servings run from 12 to 200 mcg, so your daily total is the number to watch.

Key takeaways

  • ODS lists 20 to 25 mcg of chromium a day for adult women and 30 to 35 mcg for adult men, amounts set in 2001 when chromium still counted as an essential nutrient.
  • The 35 mcg Daily Value on general-audience labels is one yardstick for all adults, so a label's % DV can hide how far a serving runs past your own need.
  • ODS describes 20 to 45 mcg a day as the safe, recommended range for adults, and it lists watery stools, headache and nausea among the side effects of larger amounts.
  • Pairing any two of our five largest chromium sources puts you at 135 to 348 mcg a day, which is why we'd choose one and stop there.

We sell six products with a chromium line on the panel, so read this as a seller checking its own math in public. Every product number below comes off those labels. Three of them sit on our weight support shelf.

How much chromium per day does an adult need?

ODS lists 20 to 35 mcg of chromium a day as the adult recommended amount, set in 2001, though scientists no longer consider chromium necessary for good health.

The ODS chromium fact sheet for consumers breaks the figures out by life stage:

  • Men 19 to 50: 35 mcg, then 30 mcg from 51 on
  • Women 19 to 50: 25 mcg, then 20 mcg from 51 on
  • Children: 11 mcg at ages 1 to 3, 15 mcg at 4 to 8, and 21 to 25 mcg at 9 to 13

These are Adequate Intakes (AIs), not firm requirements. The MedlinePlus page on chromium in the diet explains that an AI is used when there isn't enough research to set a Recommended Dietary Allowance.

Why 2001? That's when scientists still counted chromium as an essential nutrient. ODS reports no deficiency in healthy people. Chromium's job isn't fully understood, though ODS says it might help your body use carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

How much chromium per day for a woman?

ODS lists 25 mcg of chromium a day for women aged 19 to 50 and 20 mcg from 51 on.

Pregnancy nudges that to 30 mcg, and breastfeeding lifts it to 45 mcg, the highest number on the chart.

A woman's figure sits about 10 mcg below a man's at the same age, but supplement servings don't shrink to match. Our Saffron & Chromium Appetite Strips carry 75 mcg of chromium per 1-strip serving. That's 3 times the figure for a woman under 51, and nearly 4 times the 20 mcg listed after 50.

What does the % DV on a chromium label tell you?

The % DV on a chromium label compares one serving with 35 mcg, the Daily Value the FDA's labeling rules set for adults and children 4 and older, which is the one general-audience supplement labels use.

The FDA's page on the Daily Value describes Daily Values as recommended amounts of nutrients to consume or not to exceed each day. Its quick scale: 5% DV or less per serving is low, and 20% DV or more is high. Our chromium lines that print a percentage run from 86% to 571%.

The 35 matches the AI for men 19 to 50, so the yardstick is fixed at the high end of the adult range. A 35 mcg serving reads "100%", yet it's 175% of the 20 mcg listed for a woman over 50.

To check any chromium line, divide the mcg by 35 and multiply by 100:

That small gap is a good reason to add up mcg, not percentages. So is our Choline & DHA Focus Capsules panel, which lists 12 mcg of chromium per 2-capsule serving with a double asterisk in place of a percentage and the footnote "Daily Value (DV) not established." On the 35 mcg DV, 12 mcg works out to about 34%.

How much chromium picolinate per day, and does the form matter?

The mcg on a chromium picolinate label counts the chromium itself, so the same 20 to 35 mcg adult needs apply whichever form a product uses.

Panels name the nutrient first and its source in parentheses. Our Daily Multivitamin Capsules print "Chromium (as Chromium Picolinate)" at 120 mcg per 2-capsule serving, with 343% DV beside it. Since 120 ÷ 35 gives that 343%, the 120 mcg is chromium, not the whole picolinate compound.

Our six labels use four forms: picolinate, amino acid chelate, polynicotinate and nicotinate. According to ODS, absorption is about the same across the chromium forms used in supplements, so compare the mcg first. Our chromium picolinate vs polynicotinate comparison goes deeper on the forms.

So how much chromium picolinate per day? The AI for your age and sex, counted in chromium. No federal page we read says an adult needs 200 mcg.

You'll also see picolinate studied at far larger amounts. Our look at the chromium and sugar cravings trial covers one that used 1,000 mcg a day, more than 20 times the top of the 20 to 45 mcg range ODS calls safe, and sweets cravings fell nearly as much on placebo.

How much chromium is too much, and what's safe to take daily?

Neither ODS nor MedlinePlus lists an upper limit for chromium, but ODS calls 20 to 45 mcg a day safe for adults and ties larger amounts to side effects.

The chromium sheet finds no sign of harm from chromium in food or supplements, while noting that the research is limited. The ODS fact sheet on weight-loss supplements puts the safe amount for adults at the recommended 20 to 45 mcg a day. Above that, it lists these possible effects:

  • watery stools or constipation
  • nausea or vomiting
  • headache, weakness or dizziness
  • hives

MedlinePlus explains why serious trouble is uncommon: "Because of the low absorption and high excretion rates of chromium, toxicity is not common."

Four of our products serve more than 45 mcg per serving: the strip (75 mcg), the multivitamin (120 mcg), Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules (148 mcg) and MCT Oil & L-Carnitine Capsules (200 mcg). Our Beta-Alanine & Caffeine Pre-Workout Powder (Fruit Punch) joins them at its 2-scoop label maximum, since 30 mcg per 10 g scoop makes 60 mcg. None crosses a published limit, because there isn't one. Each still sits above the range ODS calls safe, so we'd never suggest going past a label's directions or stacking two of them.

Is chromium toxic? Chromium (III) vs chromium (VI)

Chromium (III), the kind ODS describes in foods and in supplement forms such as chromium picolinate, isn't the toxic one. Chromium (VI), or hexavalent chromium, is what ODS calls a poisonous byproduct of industrial manufacturing.

So when you read about toxic chromium, check which form is meant.

What's your chromium total if you pair two products?

Our heaviest pairing, Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules plus MCT Oil & L-Carnitine Capsules, gives 348 mcg of chromium a day, about 10 times the Daily Value.

Below is every pairing of our five largest chromium sources at each label's daily use, with the pre-workout at its 2-scoop maximum.

Pairing (label daily use)Daily chromiumvs. 35 mcg DVvs. 25 mcg AI
Strip (75 mcg) + pre-workout, 2 scoops (60 mcg)135 mcg3.9×5.4×
Multivitamin (120 mcg) + pre-workout180 mcg5.1×7.2×
Multivitamin + strip195 mcg5.6×7.8×
Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon (148 mcg) + pre-workout208 mcg5.9×8.3×
Strip + Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon223 mcg6.4×8.9×
MCT Oil & L-Carnitine (200 mcg) + pre-workout260 mcg7.4×10.4×
Multivitamin + Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon268 mcg7.7×10.7×
Strip + MCT Oil & L-Carnitine275 mcg7.9×11×
Multivitamin + MCT Oil & L-Carnitine320 mcg9.1×12.8×
Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon + MCT Oil & L-Carnitine348 mcg9.9×13.9×

Even the lightest pairing lands near 4 times the Daily Value. The last column uses the AI for women 19 to 50. No federal page we cite says an adult needs more than 45 mcg a day, so a second chromium product adds amount without a documented purpose.

Chromium isn't the only overlap. The multivitamin and Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules both carry biotin, and MCT Oil & L-Carnitine Capsules add 25 mg of vitamin B6 to the multivitamin's 7.5 mg. Our vitamin B6 limits explainer shows where that lands.

From our shop: Saffron & Chromium Appetite Strips — one 130 mg mixed berry film a day carries 75 mcg of chromium (as chromium picolinate), with 10 mcg of molybdenum and 10 mg of saffron alongside.

How should you take chromium, per the label?

Take chromium exactly as its label directs: one strip daily, two multivitamin capsules with a morning meal, or four MCT Oil & L-Carnitine capsules split across two meals.

  • Saffron & Chromium Appetite Strips: place 1 oral strip on the tongue daily and let it dissolve. No time of day is named.
  • Daily Multivitamin Capsules: 2 capsules in the morning with a meal.
  • Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules: adults take 2 capsules daily, with 6-8 oz of water.
  • MCT Oil & L-Carnitine Capsules: 4 capsules daily with meals, ideally 2 with water before breakfast and 2 before dinner.
  • The pre-workout: 1 scoop first to check tolerance, then 1 to 2 scoops 30 minutes before a workout, 2 at most per day.

Every one of those labels also says "Do not exceed recommended dose." Pick one product, and let its chromium be your whole supplement amount for the day.

When can you skip a chromium supplement?

You can skip a chromium supplement when food already covers your recommended amount, which ODS says a varied diet does, or when something you take already passes 45 mcg.

A higher life-stage number isn't a reason by itself. Even breastfeeding's 45 mcg, the top figure on the ODS chart, is an amount ODS says a variety of foods can supply.

If one product you take clears 45 mcg by itself, a second chromium source only pushes you further past the range ODS calls safe.

Watch for the weight-shelf double-up, too. The strip, the chromium capsules and MCT Oil & L-Carnitine each carry 75 to 200 mcg per serving, so if chromium is part of why you'd add a second, the first already has it covered.

A multivitamin can make a separate chromium product redundant too, so weigh the case for and against a daily multi before buying either.

From our shop: Daily Multivitamin Capsules — 120 mcg of chromium (as chromium picolinate) per 2-capsule serving, packed with vitamins A, C, D and E, B vitamins, zinc and selenium, so chromium comes along without a second product.

Who should talk to a healthcare provider before taking chromium?

Talk to a healthcare provider before taking chromium if you use any prescription, have surgery scheduled, manage a medical condition, are under 18, or are pregnant or nursing.

The more chromium you stack, the more that conversation matters, and every pairing in the table lands at 135 mcg or more.

Chromium might interact with some prescriptions, insulin and the thyroid medicine levothyroxine among them, so show your labels to your prescriber or pharmacist before you start. With levothyroxine, ODS explains, chromium may cut how much of the medicine you absorb.

ODS also asks anyone managing a kidney or liver condition to be cautious with high amounts of chromium. It doesn't define "high," so bring your full daily total, not one label.

Also check allergens: the MCT Oil & L-Carnitine Capsules panel says the product contains fish and shellfish.

FAQ: daily chromium intake

Is 200 mcg of chromium a day too much?

200 mcg of chromium a day is more than any adult needs, though it crosses no published limit, because the ODS consumer sheet lists none. It's over 4 times the 45 mcg top of the range ODS calls safe. Our MCT Oil & L-Carnitine Capsules hold 200 mcg per 4-capsule serving, so never add a second chromium product to them.

Is chromium safe while breastfeeding?

Ask your physician before taking a chromium supplement while breastfeeding, because every chromium label we sell says to consult one if you're nursing. ODS lists 45 mcg a day for breastfeeding women and 44 mcg for breastfeeding teens, the highest amounts on its chart. Our weight-shelf chromium products each hold more than 45 mcg per serving, one more reason to ask first.

Can you get enough chromium from food alone?

Yes, most people get enough chromium from food alone. ODS says a varied diet provides the recommended amounts, from meats and grain products to lettuce, green beans, apples, bananas, nuts and brewer's yeast, which MedlinePlus calls the best source. Any one food's chromium depends on the soil, water or animal feed behind it, and ODS adds that stainless steel equipment used in cooking or processing can pass a little into food.

Should you take chromium in the morning or at night?

Chromium has no required time of day in the NIH or MedlinePlus pages we cite, so follow each label. Our Daily Multivitamin Capsules say mornings with a meal, and MCT Oil & L-Carnitine Capsules split their 4 capsules between breakfast and dinner. The strip and Chromium, Gymnema & Cinnamon Capsules name no time.

How much chromium do teenagers need?

Chromium amounts for ages 14 to 18 are 35 mcg a day for boys and 24 mcg for girls, per the ODS table. Pregnant teens are listed at 29 mcg and breastfeeding teens at 44 mcg. Every chromium label we sell asks anyone under 18 to consult a physician first, and one strip already holds more than twice a teen boy's figure.
