The short answer: Is NMN banned in the US? No. In a September 29, 2025 response to a citizen petition, the FDA concluded that β-nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is not excluded from the dietary supplement definition. That undid the position it took in letters to NMN suppliers in late 2022. The ruling covers legal status only. It isn't a safety finding, and the FDA doesn't pre-approve supplements.
Key takeaways
- NMN is not banned in the US: the FDA's September 29, 2025 petition response says NMN is not excluded from the dietary supplement definition.
- The 2022 "ban" was the FDA's reading of the law, set out in letters to NMN ingredient suppliers.
- The FDA reversed itself by counting US supplement sales of NMN that it says go back as early as 2017, ahead of NMN's authorization for drug study.
- Lawful isn't the same as reviewed: the FDA doesn't approve supplements before sale, and its 2025 NMN ruling makes no safety finding.
- NMN isn't named on WADA's 2026 Prohibited List, but drug-tested athletes should still check with their anti-doping organization first.
We sell an NMN supplement, our 500mg NMN Capsules, so we have a stake in this answer. That's why every date below comes from the FDA's own letters, and why we flag the spot where our label goes past the amounts named in public filings.
Is NMN banned in the US right now?
No, NMN isn't banned in the US right now. Since September 29, 2025, the FDA's position has been that NMN can be an ingredient in dietary supplements.
The change came in the FDA's answer to a citizen petition about NMN, filed by the Natural Products Association (NPA) and the Alliance for Natural Health USA (ANH-USA). The agency granted the petition in part. In its words, "we now conclude that NMN is not excluded from the dietary supplement definition" under the part of the law that keeps drugs out of supplements.
"Not excluded" is legal shorthand: NMN can qualify as a supplement ingredient, as long as each product meets the usual rules. The key one here: the same letter calls NMN a new dietary ingredient, since it wasn't sold as a dietary ingredient in the US before October 15, 1994.
According to the FDA's questions and answers on dietary supplements, a company selling a new ingredient generally has to send the FDA its safety evidence at least 75 days before sale. So is NMN legal in the US? Yes, with the same strings attached to any newer ingredient.
Why did the FDA say NMN couldn't be a supplement in 2022?
In 2022, the FDA said NMN couldn't be a supplement because, by its reading then, NMN was cleared for drug study before any lawful supplement sale.
The FDA's Q&A page lays out the general rule. An ingredient approved as a new drug, or authorized for clinical study under an investigational new drug application, is generally left out of the supplement definition. The exception is an ingredient that was sold as a supplement or food first. The NMN response calls this timing test the race-to-market clause.
On the drug side, the ingredient under study went by the code name MIB-626. The FDA says MIB-626 and NMN share the same chemical structure, which makes them the same article in the agency's eyes.
On October 11, 2022, the FDA wrote to Inner Mongolia Kingdomway, an ingredient supplier with an NMN notification on file, saying NMN was excluded. The agency says it sent similar letters to every firm that had filed an NMN notification. It followed up with Kingdomway on November 4, 2022 to explain its reasoning.
Why didn't earlier supplement sales count? Back then, the FDA counted only lawful sales. It said NMN supplements sold before the drug authorization were unlawful, because they skipped the required safety notification.
What changed in the FDA's NMN ruling in 2025?
The FDA's 2025 NMN ruling dropped one requirement: NMN's early US supplement sales now count toward the race to market, even though they skipped the safety notification.
Once the agency stopped asking whether those sales were lawful, the math flipped. The response says the FDA is aware of evidence that NMN was sold as a supplement in the US as early as 2017, ahead of its authorization for drug study. The FDA still won't say when that authorization happened, because rules on investigational drugs limit what it can disclose.
On December 2, 2025, the FDA sent follow-up letters to NMN notifiers, including this one to Inner Mongolia Kingdomway. It sets aside both 2022 letters and acknowledges the company's NMN notification.
| Date | What the FDA did | Where NMN stood |
|---|---|---|
| May 16, 2022 | Acknowledged SyncoZymes' NMN notification | Supplement ingredient |
| Oct. 11 and Nov. 4, 2022 | Told NMN notifiers the ingredient was excluded | Treated as drug-only |
| March 2023 | Received the NPA and ANH-USA petition (amended December 2024) | Still drug-only |
| Sept. 29, 2025 | Granted the petition in part | Not excluded |
| Dec. 2, 2025 | Set aside its 2022 letters to Kingdomway | Filing acknowledged |
The table shows how long the drug-only stretch lasted: close to three years. Both turns hinged on the same timing question in the law.
Did the FDA approve NMN or find it safe?
No, the FDA didn't approve NMN or find NMN safe. Its 2025 ruling settles only whether NMN fits the legal definition of a dietary supplement.
As the FDA's Q&A page puts it, the law doesn't give the agency authority to approve supplements before they're marketed. Companies carry the first responsibility for meeting safety standards.
The December letter to Kingdomway makes the same point about NMN. Accepting a notification for filing is a procedural step, it says, not a finding that the ingredient, or a supplement made with it, is safe. The FDA also kept the right to act later against any product it finds unsafe, adulterated or misbranded.
Not every NMN filing got a clean acknowledgment, either. The 2025 response recounts an earlier notification the FDA objected to, because the company hadn't given an adequate basis to expect its NMN supplement to be safe. For what small human studies have recorded, see our guide to NMN side effects and who should skip it.
What daily amounts do public NMN filings describe?
Public NMN filings name different daily amounts: Kingdomway's goes up to 400 mg a day, and an earlier SyncoZymes filing names 300 mg a day.
Kingdomway's notification, which the FDA acknowledged in December 2025, covers adult supplements with no more than 400 mg of NMN per serving or per day. The SyncoZymes filing, which the FDA acknowledged without objection in May 2022, lists 300 mg a day for adults, split into one or two doses, over 12 weeks.
Our capsule holds 500 mg of NMN per 1-capsule serving, and our directions say one capsule a day. That's more than either filing describes.
The public letters don't say which brands buy which supplier's NMN, so they can't tell you whether any capsule, ours included, uses a notified ingredient at a notified amount. We can't point you to a public filing that covers 500 mg a day, so we won't claim one.
How can you tell if an NMN supplement is legit?
A legit NMN supplement label names β-nicotinamide mononucleotide, gives its milligrams per serving, and lists the serving size, the servings and every other ingredient.
NMN itself is real: the FDA's 2025 response describes it as an intermediate step in making NAD+. What varies is the product, and the panel is where you check it.
| Check | What a clear label shows | Our 500mg NMN label |
|---|---|---|
| Ingredient name | β-NMN or beta-nicotinamide mononucleotide | β-Nicotinamide Mononucleotide |
| Amount | NMN's own mg, not a blend total | 500 mg per 1-capsule serving |
| Supply | Serving size and servings per container | 1 capsule, 30 servings |
| Capsule and fillers | Shell and fillers under Other Ingredients | HPMC vegetable capsule, microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate |
| Purity | Not on any panel; ask for a batch report | Not printed |
Our label clears the four rows a panel can answer. No panel has a purity line, so that row takes a batch document. We don't print a purity figure, and our quality page is upfront about which documents we can and can't show you yet.
Three warning signs deserve a second look on any NMN listing:
- Claims of FDA sign-off. No supplement gets one before it goes on sale, so treat that wording as a red flag.
- NMN hidden in a blend. One total for several ingredients hides how much is NMN. Our guide to reading a proprietary blend shows what to look for.
- A front that doesn't match the panel. Our bottle's front says 500MG NMN, and the panel says 500 mg per capsule. Those numbers should always agree.
From our shop: 500mg NMN Capsules — each 1-capsule serving lists 500 mg of β-nicotinamide mononucleotide in an HPMC vegetable capsule, with 30 servings to a bottle.
Is NMN banned by WADA or in drug-tested sports?
NMN isn't named on the World Anti-Doping Agency's 2026 Prohibited List, but the list's catch-all section leaves room for doubt, so tested athletes should ask first.
The 2026 Prohibited List from WADA opens with section S0. It bars, at all times, any pharmacological substance the rest of the list doesn't cover that lacks current government approval for human therapeutic use. Its examples include drugs still in clinical development.
NMN sits in an odd spot: a supplement ingredient that's also been studied as a drug under the name MIB-626. WADA's list doesn't say whether S0 reaches an ingredient like that, and we won't guess. If you're tested, ask your sport's anti-doping organization.
Other countries set their own supplement rules, and this guide covers only US and WADA sources.
How do you take NMN capsules, going by the label?
The 500mg NMN Capsules label's suggested use is one capsule a day for adults, taken with 6-8 oz (177-237 ml) of water, and its caution says not to exceed that.
- Timing. The label doesn't name a time, so tie it to any daily habit you already keep.
- Supply. Thirty capsules at one a day gives you a 30-day bottle.
- Missed days. The label calls for one capsule a day, so never take two in one day to catch up.
- Storage. Per the label, keep it cool, dry and out of children's reach, and skip any bottle with a damaged or missing safety seal.
Our 500mg NAD+ & Resveratrol Capsules follow their own directions: two capsules a day, with 6 oz (177 ml) of water per serving. Neither label covers taking both together. If you're choosing between them, our NMN vs NAD+ breakdown lays out how they differ.
From our shop: 500mg NAD+ & Resveratrol Capsules — a 2-capsule serving lists NAD+ itself at 500 mg, alongside 150 mg of Japanese knotweed extract (98% resveratrol) and 250 mg of quercetin dihydrate extract.
When don't you need an NMN supplement?
You don't need an NMN supplement if the 2025 headlines are your main reason for buying one.
Think twice before buying if one of these sounds like you:
- You're hoping to feel a difference. Our label's function line is "Cellular Energy Support Formula," and we don't promise you'll notice anything.
- You compete under drug testing and can't get a clear answer from your anti-doping organization.
- You'd rather wait until more human research is published. Holding off is a perfectly reasonable choice.
To compare NMN with the rest of our NAD+ and longevity shelf, start with each product's amounts per serving, not the front of the bottle.
Who should check with a healthcare provider before starting NMN?
Talk with a healthcare provider before starting NMN if you're expecting or breastfeeding, younger than 18, managing a health condition, taking any medication, or facing surgery.
Our label's caution covers the first few: "Consult a physician if pregnant, nursing, under 18, or have a medical condition." Medications and surgery aren't on the label, but they're worth raising too.
- On medication? Bring the bottle, or a photo of its Supplement Facts panel, to your pharmacist before you start.
- Surgery coming up? Write NMN on your intake forms so the care team knows.
- Something feels off? The FDA's Q&A says to contact your healthcare provider first. Then you or your provider can report it through the FDA's Safety Reporting Portal.
FAQ: NMN's FDA status
Can the FDA change its position on NMN again?
Yes, the FDA can revisit how it reads the law, as its 2025 NMN response shows. The agency also notes it can use seizures and recalls against any supplement it finds unsafe or adulterated. So "not excluded" doesn't promise every NMN product stays on sale. Check the date on any article about NMN's status, this one included.
Does the FDA's NMN decision cover NAD+ or NR?
No, the FDA's September 2025 decision covers β-NMN only. NAD+ and nicotinamide riboside (NR) are different ingredients, and each one's standing depends on its own history and filings. Don't read the NMN reversal as a ruling on either one, or on any other NAD+-related ingredient.
Is β-NMN the same as NMN?
For the FDA's purposes, yes. The agency's 2025 response defines NMN as beta (β) nicotinamide mononucleotide, which is the name printed on our panel. A label that says only "NMN" usually means the β form, but spelling it out tells you exactly which compound the FDA's decision covers.
Is it safe to take NMN every day?
The 500mg NMN Capsules label is written for daily use: one 500 mg capsule a day for adults, with a caution not to exceed that. Whether a daily capsule suits you is a call to make with a healthcare provider, especially if you take any medication, are pregnant or nursing, are under 18, or manage a health condition. Bring the Supplement Facts panel along so your provider sees the exact amount.
How long does a bottle of 500mg NMN Capsules last?
A bottle of our 500mg NMN Capsules covers 30 days, since it holds 30 capsules and the directions call for one a day. The NAD+ & Resveratrol bottle also runs 30 days: 60 capsules, taken two at a time. Neither label mentions cycling.
