Pre-Workout Caffeine & L-Theanine Energy Powder

Pre-Workout Caffeine & L-Theanine Energy Powder (Fruit Punch) is a 200mg caffeine energy drink mix built on three actives you can count on the panel — 200mg of natural caffeine from green tea, 100mg of L-theanine and 1000mg of taurine — in a fruit punch powder that dissolves in water. Twenty servings to the tub, 20 calories a serving, no can to carry and nothing to refrigerate. The label calls it an Energy & Focus Formula.*

What you get in every serving

  • 200mg natural caffeine, from green tea
  • 100mg L-theanine
  • 1000mg taurine
  • 20 calories and 4g total carbohydrate (1% DV), including 2g of dietary fiber (7% DV)
  • Seven B vitamins, each at 33% of the Daily Value — thiamin as thiamine HCl (0.40mg), riboflavin (0.43mg), niacin (5.20mg NE), vitamin B6 as pyridoxine HCl (0.56mg), folate (133mcg DFE, 78mcg folic acid), vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin (0.80mcg) and pantothenic acid as D-calcium pantothenate (1.66mg)
  • Three minerals in citrate form — magnesium (36mg, 9% DV), sodium (60mg, 3% DV) and potassium (130mg, 3% DV)
  • Vegan, gluten free and non-GMO
  • Serving size is 2 scoops (7g); the panel marks taurine, caffeine and L-theanine "Daily Value not established", because no DV has been set for any of them

The three actives

Nothing here hides inside a proprietary blend. Each of the three carries its own number.

Caffeine sits at 200mg, and the source is named: green tea. Caffeine is an alkaloid that occurs naturally in tea leaves, coffee beans and cacao, and the reason to measure it into a powder is that 200mg is a known quantity in a way a mug of coffee never quite is.

L-theanine sits at 100mg — an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves, one of the compounds behind the taste of green tea, and the half of the pairing this product is named for.

Taurine sits at 1000mg. It's an amino sulfonic acid that occurs naturally in the human body, and at a gram a serving it's the largest single active on the panel.

What else is in the mix

Polydextrose heads the other ingredients — a soluble fibre built from glucose — and the panel records 2g of dietary fiber per serving. Citric acid, the acid that makes citrus taste sharp, does the tartness. Sucralose, a non-nutritive sweetener made from sugar, carries the sweetness. Calcium silicate keeps the powder loose instead of caking, and vegetable juice powder is there for colour; the label says so plainly.

How it tastes and mixes

Fruit punch, red and tart rather than syrupy, with citric acid sharpening the fruit and the natural and artificial flavours doing the rest. It's a powder, so it goes into cold water and you drink it from whatever you already own — shaker, bottle, glass. More water makes it lighter, less makes it punchier.

Who it's for

Anyone who wants their caffeine counted rather than guessed at, and who'd rather buy twenty servings in a tub than twenty cans. It suits a gym bag and a desk drawer equally. Vegan, gluten free and non-GMO, so it fits most eating patterns without a second read of the label. Worth knowing: one scoop is half of the panel's 2-scoop serving, so the numbers above describe two.

How to use it

Mix 1 scoop with 6–10 fl oz (177–296 mL) of water, or to taste. Use 2 scoops with double the water.

What's in it

Polydextrose, Citric acid, Natural & Artificial Flavors, Sucralose, Calcium Silicate, Vegetable Juice Powder (for color).

Net Wt. 4.9oz (140g) · 20 servings · Serving size 2 scoops (7g)

Caution: Do not exceed 5 scoops daily. Consult a physician if pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a medical condition. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. DO NOT USE IF SAFETY SEAL IS BROKEN OR MISSING. STORE IN A COOL, DRY PLACE. CONSUME WITHIN 90 DAYS.

FDA caffeine figure: The label allows up to 5 scoops a day. At that maximum this gives 500 mg of caffeine a day. For most adults, the FDA cites 400 mg of caffeine a day as an amount not generally associated with negative effects. Ask a healthcare provider before taking that much.
