The short answer: Commonly reported huperzine A side effects include a slower heart rate, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, sweating, blurred vision and trouble sleeping, according to the Department of Defense's Operation Supplement Safety program. Long-term safety isn't well understood. Huperzine A comes from Chinese club moss, and it can sit inside focus blends without appearing in the product name, including two of ours, with no microgram amount printed.

Key takeaways

  • Huperzine A is a compound isolated from Chinese club moss (Huperzia serrata) that changes how long acetylcholine, a chemical messenger, stays active in your body.
  • Operation Supplement Safety (OPSS) says safety data on huperzine A is lacking and long-term use isn't well understood.
  • Anyone taking a prescription medication should ask a pharmacist or prescriber before starting any product that lists huperzine A.
  • Our GABA, L-Tyrosine & Caffeine Capsules and Choline & DHA Focus Capsules both list huperzine A inside a proprietary blend with no microgram amount.
  • If you use one of them, stick to its label serving and don't take the two on the same day.

We sell both of those capsules. That's exactly why this guide reads their labels as bluntly as it would read a competitor's, and names the gaps where our own panels fall short.

What is huperzine A, and why is it in your focus capsule?

Huperzine A is a plant compound isolated from Chinese club moss (Huperzia serrata), and focus formulas include it because it acts on acetylcholine, a messenger your nerves use.

PubChem, the National Library of Medicine's chemistry database, describes huperzine A as an alkaloid that slows acetylcholinesterase. That's the enzyme that clears acetylcholine away after a nerve signal fires. Slow the cleanup, and the messenger hangs around longer.

This isn't a gentle food nutrient. Operation Supplement Safety's huperzine A page points out that it's an approved drug in some other countries.

It's easy to miss. Our GABA, L-Tyrosine & Caffeine Capsules list "Huperzine A 1% (Huperzia serrata) (whole herb)" as the last of eight blend ingredients. Our Choline & DHA Focus Capsules list it 18th of 18. Neither product name mentions it.

Which huperzine A side effects are commonly reported?

OPSS lists a slower heart rate, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, sweating, blurred vision and trouble sleeping as commonly reported huperzine A side effects.

That's a list, not a ranking. OPSS doesn't say how often each effect happens or at what amount, and we won't invent a number.

Why would one ingredient reach so many parts of you? PubChem notes that this enzyme-slowing class of compounds acts on the gut, bladder, eyes, skeletal muscles and heart, as well as the brain and spinal cord. Our reading is that this may be why the reported effects spread across the body, but no source we cite draws that link.

On our GABA capsule, one of those effects has a second suspect. The same blend lists caffeine, again with no amount, so if your sleep changes you can't tell which ingredient is behind it. Either way, if you notice anything on that list after starting a huperzine A product, stop taking it and talk with your healthcare provider.

What does "Huperzine A 1%" mean on a supplement label?

On our GABA capsule's label, "Huperzine A 1%" reads as a Huperzia serrata extract standardized so that 1% of its weight is huperzine A, or 1 mg per 100 mg.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements' botanical background fact sheet says standardization means measuring a marker chemical and adjusting batches so they match. It also says U.S. law has no legal or regulatory definition of the term. So the percentage is the manufacturer's description of strength, not a government grade.

Strength isn't quantity, though. The 1% says nothing about how much extract went into the capsule. Under 21 CFR 101.36, the federal labeling rule for supplements, a blend prints one total weight and lists its ingredients "in descending order of predominance by weight." The rule doesn't require individual weights, so ours don't print them.

Here's the most that rule lets you work out:

  1. The GABA capsule's blend weighs 255 mg per 1-capsule serving, shared among 8 ingredients.
  2. Huperzine A 1% is listed last. If the panel is accurate and follows the heaviest-first rule, it can't top an eighth of 255 mg, about 32 mg of extract. Our guide to reading a proprietary blend shows why position caps weight this way.
  3. At 1% strength, 32 mg of extract would hold about 0.32 mg of huperzine A, or roughly 320 mcg.

So 320 mcg is a ceiling, not a dose, and the true amount could be far lower. Even that ceiling depends on the label being right. OPSS reports that multi-ingredient huperzine A products have been found with amounts that don't match their Supplement Facts label, and with ingredients not allowed in supplements.

The Choline & DHA capsule is vaguer still. Its line reads "Huperzine A (Huperzia Serrate)(whole herb)," spelling the species "Serrate" instead of serrata and printing no percentage. As the last of 18 ingredients in a 609 mg blend per 2-capsule serving, that line can't weigh more than about 34 mg if the order holds. Without a strength, there's no way to turn that into micrograms.

Neither panel gives a microgram figure, and only the GABA capsule prints enough to estimate a cap on the huperzine A itself. If a pharmacist asks how much you're taking, the honest answer for both is that the label doesn't say.

From our shop: GABA, L-Tyrosine & Caffeine Capsules — one capsule a day, with a 255 mg blend that lists Huperzine A 1% last, after caffeine and alpha GPC.

Is huperzine A safe to take every day, or long term?

Both of our huperzine A labels direct daily use, but OPSS says safety data on huperzine A is lacking and long-term use isn't well understood.

The GABA capsule says adults take one capsule daily, and the Choline & DHA capsule says two capsules once a day. Those directions set a daily amount. They don't tell you how long anyone has studied huperzine A at that amount, and we didn't find a federal source that answers it for healthy adults.

So the truthful answer on huperzine A long-term side effects is mostly "unknown." The effects OPSS lists are ones people report, not a record of what years of use might do.

What the labels do support is restraint. Both cautions say "Do not exceed recommended dose," so take the stated serving and never make up a missed day with an extra capsule. If you expect to use a huperzine A product for more than a short stretch, bring the bottle to your provider and decide together.

Does huperzine A interact with any medications?

Huperzine A may interact with prescription medications, and OPSS cites a health organization that recommends not taking huperzine A at all, especially with prescription drugs.

The stated reason is that the combination could raise the risk of serious side effects, so this question belongs with a pharmacist who can check your actual list.

If you take any prescription medication, ask your pharmacist or prescriber before starting a product that lists huperzine A. Bring a photo of the whole Supplement Facts panel and point to the blend line, since our bottle fronts won't show what's inside.

Other supplements count too. OPSS cautions that pairing huperzine A with other supplement ingredients, especially ones sold as nootropics, might add health risks. Both of our capsules are that kind of mix: each pairs huperzine A with GABA, bacopa, phosphatidylserine and more.

Is it OK to take huperzine A and alpha GPC together?

Huperzine A and alpha GPC already share one blend in our GABA, L-Tyrosine & Caffeine Capsules, but no source we found shows the pairing works better or is safer.

The usual pitch is that alpha GPC (alpha-glycerylphosphorylcholine) supplies choline while huperzine A slows acetylcholine's breakdown. That's a sales rationale, not a finding. Our alpha-GPC benefits and side effects guide covers what's known about alpha GPC on its own.

In our capsule, alpha GPC sits sixth and huperzine A eighth in the same 255 mg blend, with no amount for either. Adding a separate alpha GPC product on top would stack a known amount onto an unknown one.

If alpha GPC is what you're really after, our Alpha-GPC & L-Theanine Focus Powder (Sour Grape) prints 300 mg of alpha GPC per 2-scoop (7.5 g) serving and lists no huperzine A. It also prints 200 mg of caffeine per serving. Its label allows up to 5 scoops a day, or 500 mg of caffeine. That's more than the 400 mg a day the FDA cites for most adults, so we'd stop at one serving, never on a GABA capsule day.

How do you take our two huperzine A capsules, per the label?

The GABA, L-Tyrosine & Caffeine Capsules label says adults take one capsule daily, and the Choline & DHA Focus Capsules label says two capsules once a day.

  • GABA, L-Tyrosine & Caffeine Capsules: one capsule daily with 6-8 oz (177-237 ml) of water. Each 1-capsule serving lists 8 mg NE of niacin (50% DV), 5 mg of vitamin B6 (290% DV) and the 255 mg blend, with 30 servings per bottle.
  • Choline & DHA Focus Capsules: two capsules once a day. Each 2-capsule serving lists 50 mg of choline, 12 mg of vitamin B6 (706% DV), 2.6 mg of iron and the 609 mg blend, which names green tea extract without a caffeine figure. That's 30 servings from 60 capsules.

Choose one, not both. Together they'd put two unmeasured amounts of huperzine A into the same day, plus 17 mg of vitamin B6 from the two panels. Our explainer on how much vitamin B6 is too much shows where that number sits.

Does a healthy adult need huperzine A for focus?

You don't need huperzine A for everyday concentration, because OPSS says no studies have shown it enhances cognitive performance in otherwise healthy people.

That applies to our capsules as much as anyone's. A few more times to pass:

  • You already take a focus product. Check its panel for huperzine A, HupA, Huperzia serrata or Chinese club moss, the names OPSS says labels may use.
  • You want exact amounts. Neither of our huperzine labels can give you a microgram figure.
  • You mainly want GABA or L-theanine. Our GABA capsule's blend hides both amounts, but other products print them.

Our nootropics and focus collection includes several formulas that don't list huperzine A anywhere on the panel.

From our shop: L-Theanine & GABA Calm Strips — one dissolving strip a day, printing 50 mg of green tea L-theanine and 25 mg of GABA per 1-strip (290 mg) serving, with no huperzine A or caffeine on the panel.

Who is huperzine A a poor fit for?

Pregnancy, nursing, being under 18, any prescription medication, a medical condition or an upcoming surgery are all reasons to skip huperzine A or get a provider's okay first.

Both labels tell you to consult a physician if you're pregnant, nursing, under 18 or have a medical condition, and the medication point comes from OPSS. Surgery is our standing advice for every supplement: tell your surgical team about everything you take, well before the date.

A few more reasons to pause:

  • You've been told your heart rate runs slow. A slower heart rate is one of the effects OPSS lists.
  • Caffeine doesn't sit well with you. The GABA capsule's blend includes caffeine with no amount printed.
  • You avoid soy or fish. The Choline & DHA label says "Contains: Soy & Fish (Tuna Fish)."
  • Young children live with you. The Choline & DHA capsule contains iron, and its label carries the standard warning about accidental iron overdose in children under 6.

FAQ: huperzine A safety

Is huperzine A a stimulant?

No, huperzine A isn't classed as a stimulant: PubChem lists it as a nootropic agent and a plant compound that slows the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine. OPSS does list trouble sleeping among its reported side effects, though, and the unmeasured caffeine in our GABA, L-Tyrosine & Caffeine Capsules could play a part there too.

When should you take huperzine A, morning or night?

Neither of our huperzine A labels names a time of day. The GABA, L-Tyrosine & Caffeine Capsules list caffeine in their blend, so morning is the practical read of that panel. The Choline & DHA Focus Capsules say two capsules once a day, and their blend names green tea extract without a caffeine figure. If your sleep suffers on either, stop and check in with your provider.

Is huperzine A safe during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

We found no safety data that supports huperzine A during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and OPSS says safety data on it is lacking in general. Both of our huperzine A labels tell you to consult a physician if you're pregnant or nursing. Our honest read is that this is a time to leave huperzine A out, unless your own provider has a specific reason to say otherwise.

Is huperzine A the same thing as Huperzia serrata?

No. Huperzia serrata is the plant, a Chinese club moss, and huperzine A is one compound isolated from it. OPSS notes huperzine A can also be made in a laboratory, and labels may list it as Huperzia serrata extract, HupA or Chinese club moss. A percentage after the name, like the 1% on our GABA capsule, describes how concentrated the extract is.

Will huperzine A show up on a drug test?

Huperzine A won't cause a positive result on a routine military drug test, according to OPSS, and it isn't prohibited for Department of Defense service members. OPSS still advises caution with products that contain it, given the limited safety evidence. Under any other testing program, check that program's own rules first.
