When to Take Glucosamine and MSM

When to take glucosamine? Our joint capsule label asks for 2 capsules daily with 6-8 oz of water and names no hour or meal. Here's how to fit it in.

The short answer: When to take glucosamine depends on your label, and ours doesn't name an hour. Betterly's MSM & Glucosamine Joint Capsules label directs adults to 2 capsules daily, with 6-8 oz of water for best results. It sets no meal rule, so morning and night both qualify. What matters more is doing it every day, so pick a moment when you reliably drink a glass of water.

Key takeaways

  • Betterly's MSM & Glucosamine Joint Capsules label tells adults to take 2 capsules daily, ideally with 6-8 oz of water.
  • That label never mentions morning, night or meals, so the best time for glucosamine is a time you'll actually repeat.
  • The NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health gives no best hour for glucosamine.
  • Our fish oil label asks for meals, so let it set your day and fit glucosamine in beside it.
  • Our joint capsule and our turmeric capsule share five ingredients, and neither bottle's directions mention combining them.

Full disclosure: we sell the joint capsule at the center of this guide, plus the fish oil, collagen and turmeric products it's compared with. Every direction below comes from the printed labels, so you can check our reading against the bottle. The joint, turmeric and fish oil bottles are all part of our Targeted Support collection.

When to take glucosamine: what does the label actually say?

The MSM & Glucosamine Joint Capsules label calls for two capsules a day, with 6-8 oz of water for best results. It gives no clock time and no meal instruction.

The directions on the bottle, in full: "As a dietary supplement, adults take two (2) capsules daily. For best results, take with 6-8 oz (177-237ml) of water or as directed by healthcare professional." Its caution opens with a limit: "Do not exceed recommended dose."

Each 2-capsule serving lists 300 mg of MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), 200 mg of GlucosaGreen® vegetal glucosamine HCl, 200 mg of turmeric powder (root), 150 mg of white willow bark extract, 100 mg of Boswellia serrata extract, 10 mg of black pepper extract and 10 mg of hyaluronic acid. All seven share the same capsules, so they share one set of directions. There's no separate schedule for the MSM or the glucosamine.

At 60 capsules a bottle, you get 30 servings: one month at the label's pace. The label sets a daily total of 2 capsules but doesn't say whether to take them in one go or split up. If you're unsure about splitting them, a pharmacist can help.

Is glucosamine better in the morning or at night?

Glucosamine has no best hour on our joint capsule label, and neither of the two NIH pages we read on glucosamine and MSM suggests one.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) puts no dose, meal advice or time of day on its glucosamine and chondroitin fact sheet. It also says studies have had inconsistent results.

You'll see claims online that a bedtime serving works better. That idea isn't on our label or on either NCCIH page, so we're not passing it on. The panel lists no caffeine, so there's no caffeine reason to keep it to mornings either.

So look for the glass of water instead of the perfect hour. Whenever 6-8 oz of water reliably happens in your day, that's your slot. It might be the glass you pour before breakfast or the bottle you refill after lunch.

If you work shifts, link the capsules to your first drink of water after you wake up, whenever that falls.

Should you take glucosamine with food or on an empty stomach?

The MSM & Glucosamine Joint Capsules label doesn't mention food at all. It asks only for 6-8 oz of water, so the capsules can go with a meal or without one.

Lots of glucosamine articles insist on a meal. Our label doesn't, and we won't add a rule it doesn't contain.

The one thing the label does ask for is 6-8 oz of water "for best results," unless your healthcare professional directs otherwise. That's about a standard glass, so a sip of coffee falls short of what's printed.

Side effects are a separate question from timing. NCCIH's page on MSM, the first ingredient on our panel, lists "digestive upsets" among MSM's side effects, along with allergic reactions and skin rashes. If the capsules leave your stomach unsettled, ask a pharmacist before you change how you take them. If it keeps happening, stop and talk to your provider.

From our shop: MSM & Glucosamine Joint Capsules — 300 mg of MSM and 200 mg of GlucosaGreen® vegetal glucosamine HCl per 2-capsule serving, with directions that ask for water but name no meal or hour.

When do you take a glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM formula?

Take a glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM formula when its own label says, as one serving. Ingredients sharing a capsule can't keep separate schedules.

The MSM & Glucosamine Joint Capsules list no chondroitin. The Turmeric Curcumin & Boswellia Capsules list 200 mg of glucosamine sulfate 2KCl, 50 mg of chondroitin sulfate and 10 mg of MSM per 2-capsule serving. So on our shelf, only the turmeric capsule is a true three-way formula, and its label adds a meal cue: two capsules once a day, taken 20-30 minutes before a meal for best results.

The salt form doesn't move the timing, since each label sets its own directions. If you're choosing between salts, our breakdown of glucosamine HCl vs sulfate runs the milligram math.

How do you time glucosamine with fish oil and collagen?

Time glucosamine with fish oil and collagen by building your day around fish oil, the only one of the three whose label asks for meals.

Our Omega-3 Fish Oil Softgels and Collagen Peptides Powder (Unflavored) each print their own directions. Here's how they line up with the joint capsule:

ProductLabel directionMeal ruleAn easy slot
MSM & Glucosamine Joint Capsules2 capsules daily with 6-8 oz of waterNone statedA fish oil meal, plus a full glass of water
Omega-3 Fish Oil Softgels1 softgel, 2 times daily with mealsWith mealsBreakfast and dinner
Collagen Peptides Powder (Unflavored)1 scoop in 8-10 oz of a beverageNone statedMorning coffee or a smoothie

Because fish oil comes twice a day with food, it gives you two fixed anchors. Glucosamine can join either fish oil meal, along with its glass of water. Collagen floats, because its label names a drink but no time.

Bottle length is the other mismatch. The fish oil bottle holds 100 softgels, so at 1 softgel twice a day it lasts 50 days, while the joint bottle's 30 servings cover 30 days. The two won't run out together, and that's fine: don't skip or double a dose just to line them up. Our guide to fish oil timing covers the two-meal routine in full.

Per 1-scoop (20 g) serving, the collagen powder's panel shows 20 g of hydrolyzed collagen peptides (from bovine hide) and 18 g of protein. Its directions call for one scoop shaken or blended into 8-10 oz of whatever you like to drink. Nothing on that panel repeats a joint capsule ingredient, so there's no overlap to total.

One workable day at label directions:

  1. Breakfast: 1 fish oil softgel with the meal, plus 2 joint capsules with a glass of water.
  2. Mid-morning: 1 scoop of collagen in coffee or a smoothie, if you use it.
  3. Dinner: the second fish oil softgel.

Once the routine is settled, jot it down. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements' guide for supplement users suggests keeping a complete record of your supplements and medicines, with each one's name, dose and how often you take it, to share with your providers.

From our shop: Omega-3 Fish Oil Softgels — 180 mg of EPA and 120 mg of DHA per 1-softgel serving, with a label that asks for one softgel two times daily with meals.

Which ingredients double up with a turmeric capsule?

Our joint capsule and our Turmeric Curcumin & Boswellia Capsules share five ingredients: glucosamine, MSM, turmeric, boswellia and black pepper extract (BioPerine® on the turmeric panel). Neither bottle's directions mention the other product.

Different timing rules make that easy to miss. The turmeric label asks for its 2 capsules 20-30 minutes before a meal for best results, while the joint label mentions no meal.

Glucosamine is the repeat that matters most here. Each bottle lists 200 mg per 2-capsule serving, but in different forms: vegetal glucosamine HCl in the joint capsule and glucosamine sulfate 2KCl in the turmeric capsule. Following both labels means two sources of glucosamine in one day. The salt comparison linked above explains why those two 200 mg figures don't carry the same amount.

If you already use both, the row-by-row panel comparison in our turmeric timing guide lists every repeated amount. Bring it to a pharmacist and ask whether one formula would cover what you're after.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements counts taking many different supplements among the situations where side effects become more likely. Two formulas with five shared ingredients edge in that direction.

The turmeric capsule also carries a warning the joint capsule doesn't: "People allergic to shellfish should not consume this product."

How long should you take glucosamine?

The MSM & Glucosamine Joint Capsules label sets no end date and no timeline. A bottle lasts 30 days at label directions, and how long to continue is a question for your provider.

Searchers also ask how long glucosamine takes to work. We can't answer that honestly, so we won't guess. NCCIH describes two large trials that each ran for 2 years and reached conflicting results. A long study isn't a promise that you'll notice anything by a certain date.

MSM is part of the same question. NCCIH's page on DMSO and MSM calls MSM's safety uncertain because little research has been done. If you're planning months of daily use, bring the bottle to a provider.

When don't you need a glucosamine supplement?

You may not need a glucosamine supplement if something you already take lists glucosamine or MSM, or if a best-hour claim is your main reason to buy.

Pause before buying if any of these fit:

  • Glucosamine already appears on a panel you take daily, so ours would stack a second source of it on top.
  • You're hoping a particular hour will make it work better. None of the sources we read connects glucosamine to the clock.
  • Gelatin isn't something you eat. The joint capsule's shell is gelatin, and that's a real limit of our bottle.
  • You're really after collagen or protein. Glucosamine is an amino sugar, not a protein, so it can't fill in for either.

Who should check with a healthcare provider first?

Get a healthcare provider's okay before starting a glucosamine routine if you're pregnant, nursing or under 18, take prescription medicine, have surgery coming up, or manage a medical condition.

Every bottle in this routine prints the same consult-a-physician line for pregnancy, nursing, under-18 use and medical conditions. Pregnancy and breastfeeding deserve extra care: NCCIH says safety information on glucosamine and chondroitin is thin for anyone expecting or nursing.

Blood thinners call for the closest look at this particular stack, because two of its pieces carry a published bleeding note. NCCIH links glucosamine and chondroitin to a higher bleeding risk in people taking warfarin, and the Office of Dietary Supplements flags high-dose omega-3s alongside anticoagulant medicines. Your prescriber should weigh the routine as one list, and that list should show the joint capsule's 150 mg of white willow bark extract too.

NCCIH also notes that glucosamine may push glucose levels up in some people. If you already keep track of your glucose, raise that before you start.

Surgery turns the timing question around. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements explains that some supplements taken before an operation can change your response to anesthesia. So ask your surgical team whether any of these bottles should come off your list beforehand, and how far ahead.

Allergens split the stack, too. The fish oil label declares "Contains: Fish (Sardines, Anchovies)." The joint capsule's panel has no Contains line, and a blank line only means nothing was declared. If you react to fish or shellfish, have an allergist read both panels before you start.

FAQ: when to take glucosamine

How many glucosamine capsules should you take a day?

Two capsules a day is the answer on Betterly's MSM & Glucosamine Joint Capsules label, and those two capsules make one serving. Together they hold 200 mg of GlucosaGreen® vegetal glucosamine HCl and 300 mg of MSM. The label's caution rules out extras: "Do not exceed recommended dose." Other brands' serving sizes differ, so read that line first.

What if you forget a day of glucosamine?

If you forget a day of glucosamine, take your usual 2 capsules the next day and carry on. Taking 4 to catch up would go past the label's daily amount, so skip the makeup dose. If missed days keep happening, move the capsules to a glass of water you almost never skip, like the one you drink right after waking up.

Can you take glucosamine with blood thinners?

Ask your prescriber before taking glucosamine with any blood thinner. NCCIH notes an increased bleeding risk reported in people who take glucosamine and chondroitin alongside warfarin, an anticoagulant medicine. If you take fish oil too, mention it in the same conversation. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements' omega-3 fact sheet says high doses of omega-3s may cause bleeding problems with warfarin or other anticoagulant medicines.

Do glucosamine tablets and capsules follow different timing?

Glucosamine tablets and capsules each follow their own label, and the format alone doesn't set a time of day. Betterly sells glucosamine only in capsules, and the joint capsule's direction is 2 capsules daily with 6-8 oz of water. A tablet from another brand follows its own directions, including any meal rule.

Can you open glucosamine capsules and mix them into a drink?

Our joint capsule label doesn't mention opening the capsules. It says to take 2 capsules with 6-8 oz of water, and we'd follow it as written. If you struggle with capsules, a pharmacist can tell you whether opening these ones makes sense. Either way, keep the daily amount at one 2-capsule serving.
