When to Take Turmeric: Morning or Night?

When to take turmeric comes down to a meal you never skip. We map our capsule's label, 20-30 minutes before a meal, onto a real day with fish oil.

The short answer: When to take turmeric depends on the label on your bottle. Betterly's Turmeric Curcumin & Boswellia Capsules label says two capsules once a day, 20-30 minutes before a meal. It doesn't name morning or night, so any meal you eat daily can work. Plenty of guides say to take turmeric with food instead, and we'll show you both.

Our stake here: we sell the turmeric capsule this guide keeps returning to. Where its directions differ from popular advice, we show both rather than the one that flatters our bottle.

Key takeaways

  • Betterly's Turmeric Curcumin & Boswellia Capsules label directs two capsules once a day, taken 20-30 minutes before a meal.
  • Neither that label nor the NIH's turmeric page picks an hour, so a morning or evening serving works when a meal follows.
  • Many turmeric guides say to take it with a meal that has some fat, about half an hour later than our label's window.
  • Each 2-capsule serving already lists 10mg of BioPerine®, a black pepper extract, so there's no pepper to add or time.
  • If you take any medicine, ask a pharmacist before you settle on a turmeric schedule.

When should you take turmeric capsules?

Take turmeric capsules when their label says to. For Betterly's Turmeric Curcumin & Boswellia Capsules, the label's answer is two capsules once a day, 20-30 minutes before a meal.

Here's the full direction on the bottle: "As a dietary supplement take two (2) capsules once a day. For best results take 20-30 min before a meal or as directed by your healthcare professional." The caution line adds, "Do not exceed recommended dose."

The direction never names an hour. It's tied to eating, so breakfast, lunch or dinner can each satisfy it.

One serving carries 800mg of turmeric root powder plus 100mg of a 95% curcuminoid extract, a concentrate of the yellow compound family that includes curcumin.

So when should you take turmeric curcumin? In our capsule, the 100mg curcuminoid extract sits in the same 2-capsule serving as the root powder, so it follows the same before-a-meal direction. A curcumin-only product from another brand follows its own label.

When to take turmeric: is morning or night better?

Neither morning nor night is better on paper, because our turmeric capsule label and the NIH's turmeric page both leave time of day out.

The federal turmeric fact sheet from the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) describes turmeric as a ginger-family plant, Curcuma longa, whose rhizome, or underground stem, is the part people use. It gives no timing or food advice. Its research summary is blunt: "We don't know enough to definitively conclude if turmeric or curcumin is beneficial for any health purposes."

So no hour can promise a result the research hasn't shown. What a set time can do is make the serving easy to repeat.

Our Cinnamon & Licorice Root Drops, with 75 mg of a 1:5 turmeric root extract per 2 ml (40 drops) serving, say to take them daily "in the morning." The Ashwagandha & Holy Basil Ayurvedic Capsules label, with 150 mg of turmeric root (95% extract) in each 1-capsule serving, says "preferably with a meal." Each formula's own label sets its timing.

For our capsules, pick the meal that fits your week:

  • Morning suits you if breakfast is steady and you like getting supplements done early.
  • Evening suits you if breakfast gets rushed or skipped but dinner happens at home.
  • Whichever you pick, keep it at the same meal every day.

Should you take turmeric before a meal or with food?

Betterly's turmeric capsule label says before a meal, by 20-30 minutes, while many other guides say to take turmeric with food, often a meal with some fat.

The with-food advice is usually offered as an absorption tip, and the federal pages cited here don't settle it.

Our label doesn't explain its window. Nearly the same sentence appears on our Sea Moss, Bladderwrack & Burdock Capsules and Organic Maca Root Capsules labels, so it reads like the maker's general direction for capsules. It's still the bottle's direction, and the one we point you to.

Only the first row is a real disagreement, a gap of about half an hour. The pepper is already in the serving, so don't add more.

If you'd rather take the capsules with your meal, ask a pharmacist first. The label's "or as directed by your healthcare professional" leaves room for that change. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) counts pharmacists among the providers who should hear about any supplement you use.

When should you take turmeric with black pepper?

With Betterly's turmeric capsules, black pepper needs no separate timing, because every 2-capsule serving already includes 10mg of BioPerine®, a black pepper extract sold under that trademark.

Piperine, a compound in black pepper, can help your body take up more curcumin when the two are combined, according to NCCIH. That uptake is called bioavailability, meaning the share of a dose that reaches your circulation in usable form.

No hour of the day changes NCCIH's liver caution for curcumin made more absorbable, and we read that caution as covering pepper-paired capsules like ours. Our side-by-side of turmeric root and curcumin extract explains that reading, and the warning signs are listed below.

Ginger is already in the capsule too: the serving lists 100mg of ginger root extract. So if you're wondering when to take a turmeric and ginger supplement, this capsule's answer is together. If you're tempted to add a separate pepper or ginger product on top, run it past your provider first.

From our shop: Turmeric Curcumin & Boswellia Capsules — 30 servings per bottle, with 100mg of a 95% curcuminoid extract in each 2-capsule serving, taken 20-30 minutes before one daily meal.

Can you take turmeric and fish oil at the same meal?

Turmeric and fish oil can share a meal, since Betterly's Omega-3 Fish Oil Softgels are labeled for one softgel twice daily with meals. The turmeric capsules go 20-30 minutes before one of them. Neither label mentions the other, and we won't claim the pair does anything special together.

The allergen lines differ, so read both before you start.

Here's one way the two labels fit a day: turmeric capsules 20-30 minutes before dinner, one fish oil softgel with dinner and the other with breakfast. If breakfast is your steadier meal, move the turmeric there instead.

Each softgel lists 180mg of EPA and 120mg of DHA, so two a day come to 600mg of the pair by our math. The ODS omega-3 fact sheet for consumers notes an FDA recommendation to cap EPA plus DHA from supplements at 5 g daily. It also warns that at high doses, omega-3s taken with anticoagulant medicines may lead to bleeding problems. Our breakdown of the omega-3 in a 1,000 mg fish oil softgel shows how to read that panel.

From our shop: Omega-3 Fish Oil Softgels — 1,000mg of fish oil concentrate with 180mg of EPA and 120mg of DHA per 1-softgel serving, taken at two meals a day.

How far apart should turmeric be from other supplements and medicines?

Betterly's turmeric capsule label sets no gap from other supplements. The bigger issue is overlap, and for medicines, a pharmacist should decide the timing.

Overlap is easy to miss when two bottles sit at different meals. Say the turmeric capsules go before dinner and our MSM & Glucosamine Joint Capsules at breakfast, with 6-8 oz (177-237ml) of water as their label directs. Per 2-capsule serving of each, five rows repeat:

Row on both panelsTurmeric capsules (before dinner)Joint capsules (breakfast)
Turmeric800mg root + 100mg curcuminoid extract (95%)200 mg root powder
Glucosamine200mg glucosamine sulfate 2KCl200 mg GlucosaGreen® vegetal glucosamine HCl

MSM10mg300 mg
Pepper extract10mg BioPerine®10 mg, std. to 95% piperine

All five rows land in the same day even though the bottles never share a meal, so spacing them apart doesn't shrink the total. Two of our powders also hide turmeric and pepper inside a blend.

Before adding both to your plan, ask a pharmacist whether that daily total suits you, or whether you need both at all. Our targeted support collection carries both bottles, and our notes on building a routine you can actually keep make the case for a shorter list.

Medicines are a separate question. The FDA's consumer page on mixing medications and dietary supplements says certain supplements can change the absorption, metabolism or excretion of a medication. NCCIH adds that anyone taking medicine should talk with a provider before using an herbal product.

The FDA asks you to bring a list of every supplement and medicine to each visit, with doses and how many times a day you take them. It notes some people simply bag up every bottle instead.

How do you fit turmeric capsules into your day?

Pick one daily meal, take two Turmeric Curcumin & Boswellia Capsules 20-30 minutes before it, and return to that same meal each day.

  1. Read the allergen line first. It lists shellfish (crab, lobster and crawfish), and a separate WARNING line tells anyone allergic to shellfish not to consume the product.
  2. Choose a meal you eat at home or at a predictable hour, so the half-hour lead is easy to hit.
  3. Set a cue, like a phone alarm 25 minutes before dinner, or take the capsules as you start cooking.
  4. Swallow both capsules together, since the label calls for the pair at one sitting, once a day.
  5. Keep count. Sixty capsules make 30 servings, so a bottle lasts a month when you follow the label.

Oral turmeric can bring on nausea, acid reflux or an upset stomach, according to NCCIH. If one of them turns up in the half hour before your meal, jot down which meal and how soon, and take that note to your pharmacist before you change anything.

When can you skip turmeric capsules altogether?

You can skip turmeric capsules altogether if turmeric in food is all you're after, and no timing plan changes NCCIH's view that the evidence isn't settled.

  • You cook with turmeric and like it that way. A curry and a capsule are different decisions.
  • You're allergic to shellfish, which rules out our turmeric capsule by its own label.
  • You're hoping the right hour will make turmeric do more. None of our sources ties any time of day to a result.

Who should talk to a provider before starting turmeric?

Talk to a provider before starting turmeric if any of these fit you: pregnancy, nursing, being under 18, taking medication, a procedure on the calendar or a medical condition.

That list mirrors our label's caution: "Consult a physician if pregnant, nursing, under 18, or have a medical condition." In pregnancy or while nursing, ask whether to take turmeric at all before asking when. NCCIH calls turmeric supplements a possible safety risk in pregnancy, and says the safety of above-food amounts while breastfeeding is still an open question.

For turmeric, three timing calls belong with a professional:

  • How early should you pause before a procedure? The FDA says your provider may ask you to stop supplements two or three weeks ahead, so raise it once the date is set.
  • What should the pharmacist see? Your full supplement and medicine list, plus the meal your turmeric goes before.
  • When should you stop and call? Right away, per NCCIH, once any of these appear: fatigue, nausea, poor appetite, dark urine, or yellowing skin or eyes. Stop every turmeric and curcumin product and contact your provider.

FAQ: when to take turmeric

Can you take turmeric on an empty stomach?

Yes, briefly, if you follow our label. Betterly's turmeric capsule label asks for the serving 20-30 minutes before a meal, so your stomach may be fairly empty, with food soon after. NCCIH's turmeric page names stomach upset as one possible effect. If that gap before eating bothers your stomach, tell a pharmacist before you move the serving closer to the meal.

Can you take turmeric at night before bed?

Taking turmeric right before bed doesn't fit our capsule's label, because its direction ties the serving to a meal 20-30 minutes later, and most people don't eat after going to bed. If evenings suit you better, take the two capsules before dinner instead. Neither our label nor NCCIH's turmeric page links turmeric to sleep in either direction.

Can you split the two turmeric capsules between morning and evening?

Splitting the two turmeric capsules isn't what our label describes. The panel counts every amount, from 800mg of turmeric root powder to 10mg of BioPerine®, per 2-capsule serving, and the directions attach that whole serving to one meal. A morning-and-evening split would be a new schedule, and the label reserves changes like that for your healthcare professional.

What if you forget to take turmeric one day?

If you forget your turmeric capsules one day, let that serving go and pick up at your normal meal tomorrow, with two capsules, not four. Two capsules once a day is the label's direction, and its caution line rules out exceeding the recommended dose. If you miss often, pick a meal you rarely skip.

Is there a best time to drink turmeric tea or a turmeric shot?

No, turmeric tea and homemade turmeric shots have no label timing, because food and drinks don't come with supplement directions. NCCIH's pregnancy and breastfeeding cautions target supplements and more-than-food amounts. If you also take a turmeric capsule, mention your turmeric drinks to your provider too.
