Is 10mg Melatonin Too Much? Doses Compared

Is 10mg melatonin too much? It's twice the 5 mg-a-day line above which an NIH summary counted use as high-dose. We compare our 1mg, 2mg and 10mg labels.

The short answer: Is 10mg melatonin too much? It's a high dose, and for most adults it's an odd place to start. An NIH research summary treated anything above 5 mg a day as high-dose use, so 10 mg is double that line. NCCIH adds that side-effect data is thinnest at doses higher than your body makes on its own. We sell a 10 mg capsule and still treat it as our top rung.

Key takeaways

  • A 10 mg serving of melatonin is twice the 5 mg-a-day line above which an NIH research summary counted use as high-dose.
  • No federal page we checked sets an upper limit or a standard adult dose for melatonin, so the label's suggested use is your ceiling.
  • NCCIH says short-term melatonin use appears safe for most people, but long-term safety information is lacking.
  • Our 10 mg capsule also has a 905 mg blend with St. John's wort, L-tryptophan and 5-HTP, which matters if you take any medicine.
  • If you're new to melatonin, a lower-dose product is the more cautious first trial.

We sell melatonin at three strengths: 1mg Melatonin Sleep Strips, Valerian & Chamomile Sleep Capsules at 2 mg per serving, and 10mg Melatonin Sleep Capsules. The 10 mg bottle is our strongest, so we have every reason to talk it up. Instead, here's its whole panel next to the two gentler options.

Is 10mg melatonin too much for most adults?

10mg melatonin counts as high-dose use by the more-than-5-mg-a-day cut-off in a study NIH summarized in 2022.

NIH Research Matters described that study in March 2022. It looked at national survey data on adults from 1999 to 2018. Use of more than 5 mg a day more than tripled, from 0.08% in 2005-2006 to 0.28% in 2017-2018.

The summary said high-dose use stayed very low overall, but it raised safety concerns anyway, partly because the real melatonin content of a product may be many times higher than its label says. Read NIH's report on rising melatonin use for the details.

"Too much" can mean two different things:

  • Too much to be safe? No U.S. federal source we checked has drawn that line for melatonin, which is the uncomfortable part.
  • More than you need? We found no federal source showing 10 mg works better than a smaller amount, so the extra milligrams haven't earned their place.

Why there's no official upper limit for melatonin

Many vitamins and minerals have official upper limits. NCCIH's sleep page, for example, lists 350 mg a day for magnesium from supplements and medications in adults. None of the federal pages we checked gives melatonin, a hormone, a matching number. Our 10 mg panel also gives melatonin no Daily Value (its footnote reads "Daily Value not established"), but that's a separate point: a Daily Value drives the % DV column and says nothing about a safe maximum. With no upper limit to lean on, the label's directions are the only line you've got.

Is 10mg melatonin safe, or just more than you need?

NCCIH says short-term melatonin use appears safe for most people, but it singles out higher doses as the range where side-effect information runs thin.

On its page Melatonin: What You Need To Know, NCCIH says that "particularly at doses higher than what the body normally produces," there isn't yet enough information on side effects "to have a clear picture of overall safety." It doesn't put a milligram figure on natural production, and we won't invent one.

Short-term studies in adults turned up mild side effects, NCCIH says, such as headache, dizziness, nausea and sleepiness. Our guide to next-morning melatonin grogginess covers that last one.

The number on the bottle may not be the number inside

NCCIH describes a 2017 study that tested 31 melatonin supplements. For most of them, the melatonin content didn't match the label, and 26% contained serotonin. NCCIH also cites a 2023 study of 25 melatonin gummy products that found 22 were mislabeled, and most held more melatonin than stated.

That finding applies to us too. Betterly doesn't manufacture anything, and as our quality page explains, our labels reproduce the manufacturer's specification unchanged. Read any melatonin label, ours included, as the declared amount. If a product runs high, a smaller starting dose leaves you more margin.

What else is in our 10mg capsule besides melatonin?

Betterly's 10mg Melatonin Sleep Capsules list 10 mg melatonin, 1.8 mg vitamin B6, 17 mg calcium, 13 mg magnesium and a 905 mg blend per 2-capsule serving.

The panel as printed, per 2-capsule serving (30 servings per bottle):

Panel rowAmount% Daily Value
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine HCl)1.8 mg106%
Calcium (as Calcium Carbonate)17 mg1%
Magnesium (as Magnesium Citrate)13 mg3%
Melatonin10 mgNot established
Sleep Formula Proprietary Blend905 mgNot established

The blend holds 14 ingredients: L-tryptophan, lycium fruit (Lycium barbarum), chamomile flower, lemon balm, passion flower, L-taurine, hops flower, St. John's wort, GABA, Chinese skullcap root, L-theanine, ashwagandha root, inositol, and 5-HTP from Griffonia simplicifolia seed. The shell is a hypromellose vegetable capsule, and the label's claims are vegan, gluten free and non-GMO.

The catch: the label gives the blend's 905 mg total, not each ingredient's share, so you can't tell how much St. John's wort or 5-HTP you're getting.

Two parts of that blend deserve a closer look:

  • L-tryptophan and 5-HTP. NCCIH's overview of sleep and complementary health approaches describes both as substances the body can change into melatonin. So this capsule pairs 10 mg of melatonin with two of its building blocks. The same page flags L-tryptophan supplements as a serious safety concern alongside medicines that affect serotonin.
  • St. John's wort. According to NCCIH's St. John's wort safety page, this herb can weaken the effects of many medicines, including birth control pills and some blood thinners. NCCIH advises anyone who takes any type of medicine to talk with a health care provider first.

So this capsule suits a specific reader: an adult who takes no medicine, prescription or over-the-counter, and wants the botanical blend along with the melatonin.

1mg, 2mg or 10mg: how do our three melatonin labels compare?

Betterly's melatonin labels list 1 mg per 1 Oral Strip (210 mg) serving, and 2 mg or 10 mg per 2-capsule serving in our valerian and high-dose capsules.

LabelMelatonin per servingWhat else is listedSuggested use
1mg Melatonin Sleep Strips1 mg per 1-strip servingValerian root extract 50 mg, lavender extract 20 mg, chamomile extract 10 mg, hibiscus extract 10 mg1 strip on the tongue daily
Valerian & Chamomile Sleep Capsules2 mg per 2 capsulesValerian extract (root) 150 mg; chamomile extract, GABA, L-tryptophan, lemon balm extract, passion flower extract at 100 mg each2 capsules daily with water
10mg Melatonin Sleep Capsules10 mg per 2 capsules905 mg blend of 14 ingredients, amounts not listed2 capsules once a day, 20-30 min before bed

The top rung carries 10 times the melatonin of the strip and 5 times the valerian capsule's 2 mg. It's also the only one that hides its herbal amounts inside a blend, and the only one whose label names a time window.

The strip dissolves on your tongue and is raspberry flavored, sweetened with xylitol, erythritol, sorbitol syrup and steviol glycosides. Only the valerian capsule skips the vegan claim; its other ingredients list gelatin. You can compare the amounts per serving across our Sleep & Stress Relief collection.

From our shop: 1mg Melatonin Sleep Strips — 1 mg of melatonin and 50 mg of valerian root extract in each raspberry-flavored strip, 30 strips per pack, for adults starting at the low rung.

Which is better, 5mg or 10mg melatonin?

Neither 5mg nor 10mg melatonin has been shown to be better in any federal source we reviewed, and 10 mg carries more of the uncertainty NCCIH describes at higher doses.

The same logic covers the "10mg vs 3mg" question. If a smaller amount does the job for you, the bigger one adds unknowns without a demonstrated payoff. A 5 mg product sits right at the high-dose cut-off in the study NIH summarized, and 10 mg is well past it.

NCCIH describes melatonin as a hormone your brain makes in response to darkness, one that helps with the timing of your internal clock and with sleep. Its clearest everyday example is jet lag, which NCCIH says melatonin supplements may help with after eastward or westward flights. So before choosing a dose, ask whether your problem is timing at all.

The 10 mg capsule fits a narrower reader than its big number suggests, since the medicine row covers many adults.

How should you take the 10mg capsule if you choose it?

Betterly's 10mg Melatonin Sleep Capsules label suggests two capsules once a day, 20 to 30 minutes before bedtime, with 8 oz (237 ml) of water.

  1. Take the serving as printed. Two capsules is the 10 mg serving. For less melatonin, choose a lower-dose product instead of splitting the serving.
  2. Don't stack melatonin products. Adding our strip puts you at 11 mg of melatonin. Adding the valerian capsule puts you at 12 mg, plus a second source of L-tryptophan.
  3. Skip a second serving at 3 a.m. The label says "Do not exceed recommended dose."
  4. Hold off on driving. Melatonin can cause sleepiness, per NCCIH, so wait to get behind the wheel until you know how a 10 mg serving affects you.

The strip and valerian labels give no timing, so we won't guess one.

From our shop: 10mg Melatonin Sleep Capsules — 10 mg of melatonin and a 905 mg sleep formula blend per 2-capsule serving in vegan capsules, for adults who've read the blend and want the top rung.

When don't you need melatonin at all?

You likely don't need melatonin if you fall asleep fine and wake rested, and 10 mg makes least sense when light, caffeine or a busy mind is the problem.

Some honest reasons to skip the bottle:

  • Bright evenings. NCCIH notes that light at night can block your own melatonin, so dimming screens and lamps is the free first step.
  • Thoughts that won't settle. Our guide to calming a racing mind at night lays out a realistic wind-down.
  • You'd prefer something hormone-free. Our guide to sleep aids without melatonin compares those options.
  • Poor sleep that has dragged on for weeks. Bring that to a healthcare provider before you reach for a bigger dose.

If you're torn between melatonin and a mineral, our magnesium vs melatonin comparison weighs the two. And if the low end appeals, a separate guide asks whether 1mg of melatonin is enough.

Who should check with a healthcare provider first?

Anyone taking any medicine should talk to a provider before Betterly's 10mg Melatonin Sleep Capsules, because each serving pairs a high melatonin dose with St. John's wort, L-tryptophan and 5-HTP.

Hand your pharmacist the bottle itself, since the interactions described earlier apply here. Melatonin carries its own flag: NCCIH says blood-thinner users should take it only under medical supervision. And if you already use a separate melatonin, 5-HTP or tryptophan product, this blend doubles up on it.

Four groups appear in the label's own caution line: anyone who's pregnant, nursing, younger than 18 or has a medical condition. Each should get a physician's okay first. On pregnancy, NCCIH's pages go further for this blend: St. John's wort may be unsafe then, and melatonin research in pregnant or breastfeeding women is lacking.

Two other situations deserve a call before your first serving. If you're older, NCCIH notes, melatonin may keep working longer than it would in a younger adult, which can mean drowsiness during the day. And if surgery is scheduled, list this capsule with your other supplements for the care team.

FAQ: 10mg melatonin

How much melatonin should an adult take?

None of the federal pages we checked sets an official adult dose for melatonin. The practical ceiling is the suggested use on the label in your hand. If you're new to melatonin, a low-dose product is the more cautious trial, and 10 mg sits at the high end. Ask a healthcare provider if you take medicines.

Can you take 10mg melatonin every night?

Our 10 mg label is written as a once-a-day serving, but NCCIH says information on the long-term safety of melatonin supplements is lacking. If you find yourself reaching for 10 mg night after night for weeks, talk it over with a healthcare provider, and look at evening light, late caffeine and your bedtime routine first.

Can you take two 10mg melatonin capsules?

Two capsules that each hold 10 mg of melatonin add up to 20 mg, double a 10 mg serving. Betterly's capsules hold 5 mg each, so two capsules is our 10 mg serving, and the label says not to exceed the recommended dose. Doubling that serving would mean 20 mg of melatonin plus a second 905 mg dose of the blend, St. John's wort included. If one serving doesn't seem to help, talk to a healthcare provider before taking more.

Why isn't 10mg melatonin working for me?

Melatonin helps with the timing of your internal clock and with sleep, according to NCCIH, so even 10 mg can seem to do little when bright light, caffeine or an uneven schedule is the real issue. NCCIH notes that light at night can block the body's own melatonin. Check your evening screens, bedtime consistency and afternoon coffee before deciding the dose is too low.

Is 10mg melatonin safe for kids or teens?

Betterly's 10 mg melatonin capsules shouldn't go to a child or teen unless a physician approves, because the label's caution covers everyone under 18. Each serving also delivers St. John's wort, 5-HTP and L-tryptophan in amounts the label doesn't break out, so a doctor has more than melatonin to weigh. If a teenager's sleep seems off, have that conversation before opening any bottle.
