- FAQ: when to take cordyceps
- Sources
The short answer: No study we found has pinned down when to take cordyceps. The two trials in the NIH's LiverTox database that tested cordyceps alone on exercise performance gave it daily, ended up similar to placebo and never compared times of day. So the label decides: our gummy says one to two gummies daily, which is 200 mg to 400 mg of cordyceps extract, with no hour or meal named. Choose a slot your week can hold.
Key takeaways
- The two LiverTox trials that tested cordyceps alone on exercise performance ran for 5 and 12 weeks, ended similar to placebo, and neither tested what time of day to take it.
- The only timing word on the Cordyceps Mushroom Energy Gummies label is "daily": one to two gummies, with no hour or meal attached.
- Our cordyceps gummy and drop panels list no caffeine, so neither one stands in for a caffeinated pre-workout.
- Two gummies is the label's daily maximum, and every gummy carries 2 g of added sugar.
Full disclosure: Betterly sells cordyceps in a strawberry gummy, two dropper bottles, a ten-mushroom capsule and several blends, so we have every reason to want you buying it. We'd still rather you keep a routine than chase a pre-gym jolt no label promises, so every direction below is quoted from our own labels.
When is the best time to take cordyceps?
No published study we could find has identified a best time to take cordyceps, so the directions printed on the label are the firmest guide you have.
The label on our Cordyceps Mushroom Energy Gummies reads, "Take one (1) to two (2) gummies daily." It doesn't mention mornings, workouts or meals.
LiverTox, an NIH reference on liver safety for medicines, herbs and supplements, summarizes several cordyceps trials. Two of them measured exercise performance with cordyceps alone. Twenty-two male cyclists took 3 g a day of Cs-4, a lab-grown cordyceps strain, for 5 weeks. Fifteen adults aged 50 to 75 took 333 mg three times a day for 12 weeks.
Both cordyceps groups finished about where their placebo groups did, on endurance for the cyclists and on oxygen uptake for the older adults. LiverTox's wider verdict is that no claimed benefit of cordyceps has yet been shown convincingly in human trials.
Neither trial compared morning with evening or pre-gym with breakfast, so the research can't rank one hour above another. That hands the choice to your calendar: pick the slot you'd still manage on your busiest weekday.
When to take cordyceps on training days: before or after?
On training days, take cordyceps in the same slot you use on rest days, because no published results show a pre-workout or post-workout dose working differently.
Plenty of mushroom brand blogs say to take cordyceps 30 to 60 minutes before exercise, but no published results support that window. The two LiverTox performance trials can't settle it, because both dosed daily rather than around sessions.
A protocol registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, the National Library of Medicine's study registry, enrolled 30 young men and dosed cordyceps only around training, three times a week for 4 weeks. One group split two capsules between about 11 hours and 1 hour before each session, one took both right after, and one got a placebo. The record lists the dose as 200 mg of a 10:1 Cs-4 extract.
The study finished in August 2026 but had posted no results when we checked the record on September 23, 2026. Until it or another study publishes, a pre-gym window for cordyceps is a guess.
Beetroot is the contrast. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) fact sheet on exercise supplements says beet juice volunteers typically drank 2 cups two and a half to three hours before exercise. Cordyceps has no such pattern.
Rest days count, too: the gummy label says "daily," not "on training days."
Can you take cordyceps on an empty stomach?
Yes, you can take cordyceps gummies or drops on an empty stomach, since neither label mentions food and none of the sources we cite favors taking it with a meal.
A gummy is hardly a fasting dose, anyway: each lists 10 calories and 3 g of total carbohydrate per 1-gummy serving.
How your gut reacts should decide it. LiverTox calls cordyceps extracts well tolerated, with only minimal or mild adverse events that can include stomach discomfort, loose stools, nausea, a dry mouth, less appetite and rash. If any of those show up when you take cordyceps before eating, move it to a meal.
Of the four cordyceps products in the table further down, only the Mushroom Capsules connect their dose to a meal.
Can you take cordyceps before bed?
Our cordyceps gummy is labeled an "Energy & Focus Formula," so a daytime slot matches it best, even though its directions don't rule out an evening dose.
Beyond its 200 mg of cordyceps extract, each gummy lists DMAE, GABA, L-glutamine and ginkgo leaf at 25 mg apiece. Our Cordyceps & Lion's Mane Energy Drops read "Mushroom Energy & Focus Formula," and every 1 ml adds Alpha GPC, L-Tyrosine and 500 mcg of vitamin B12 to 100 mg each of cordyceps and lion's mane extracts.
None of our sources covers that mix at any hour, and LiverTox's list of mild cordyceps side effects doesn't mention sleep. That leaves the formula name as the only timing hint on either bottle, and "Energy & Focus" is a daytime name.
Neither panel lists caffeine, though one of our cordyceps blends does carry a caffeine source. Our Organic 6 Mushroom Blend Powder lists organic green tea leaf extract, and tea is among the caffeine sources the ODS exercise sheet names. That panel gives no caffeine amount, so keep that scoop to daytime too.
How much cordyceps per day do our labels give you?
Our four main cordyceps labels give you 50 mg to 400 mg of cordyceps a day, and the gummies reach 400 mg only at the two-gummy maximum.
| Product (serving) | Cordyceps per serving | Daily direction | Meal or hour named? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy gummies (1-gummy serving) | 200 mg of extract | 1 or 2 gummies | Neither |
| Energy drops (1-ml serving) | 100 mg of extract | One 1 ml dropper | Neither |
| Chaga & Cordyceps Mushroom Drops (1-ml serving) | 50 mg of extract | One 1 ml dropper | Neither |
| Ten-mushroom capsules (2-capsule serving) | 266 mg of mycelium powder | One 2-capsule serving | Before a meal |
At two a day, the gummies carry the most cordyceps of the four, and none of the four names a time of day. A few other blends we sell list less cordyceps or hide its share inside a blend total.
Per LiverTox, herbal use centers on two species, Ophiocordyceps sinensis (formerly Cordyceps sinensis) and Cordyceps militaris, and today's supplements mostly start from Cs-4 grown in a lab. Our capsule panel names Cordyceps sinensis mycelium. The gummy panel just says "Cordyceps Extract," with no species, mushroom part or extract ratio.
That makes LiverTox's range for commercial products, 0.5 to 4 grams daily, a loose yardstick for our 200 mg to 400 mg. The registered timing trial called its 200 mg a 10:1 extract equal to 2,000 mg of raw cordyceps. Our label prints no ratio, so don't multiply our number.
Stay inside the label: every one of these bottles says "Do not exceed recommended dose." Taking the gummies and the energy drops on the same day stacks 300 mg to 500 mg of cordyceps extract from two products, so we'd pick one. Our breakdown of mushroom gummies versus capsules and drops compares those formats on sugar and milligrams.
From our shop: Cordyceps Mushroom Energy Gummies — a strawberry gummy that carries 200 mg of cordyceps extract and 2 g of added sugar each, with vegan, gluten-free and non-GMO claims on the label.
How should you schedule cordyceps around your day?
Schedule cordyceps from the label out: one to two gummies or one 1 ml dropper daily, in a single slot that stays put on training and rest days.
Here's what the labels ask of you:
- Gummies: "Take one (1) to two (2) gummies daily." That's a daily total, and the label doesn't ask you to split it.
- Drops: "Shake well. Take 1 ml (30 drops) daily."
- Supply: the bottle's 30 gummies cover a month at one daily, or half that at two.
Then set that slot against your training week. If you also take our Organic Beetroot Capsules, the last row covers them.
| Your situation | Where cordyceps goes | The label line that decides it |
|---|---|---|
| You train before work | Breakfast | Gummy and drops name no meal |
| You train after work | Breakfast or lunch | Both say "Energy & Focus" |
| It's a rest day | Your usual slot | The gummy says "daily" |
| You use the Mushroom Capsules | 20 to 30 min before a meal | That label names a meal |
| You add beetroot capsules | Cordyceps unchanged; beetroot 20 to 30 min before a meal | The beetroot label names a meal |
Read down the middle column and cordyceps barely moves. Only the ten-mushroom and beetroot capsule labels tie their timing to food. You'll find the gummies, drops and beetroot side by side in our energy support collection.
Can you take cordyceps with a pre-workout or beetroot?
None of our sources covers cordyceps taken with coffee, a pre-workout or beetroot, though our gummy's panel lists no caffeine, so it adds nothing to your caffeine total.
The ODS exercise sheet says most combinations of performance ingredients haven't been studied, so no one knows how effective or safe they are. It also warns that performance supplements might interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines. A pre-workout could contain almost anything, and our gummy adds ginkgo leaf, DMAE and GABA, so show both labels to a healthcare provider before you stack them.
Cordyceps also isn't a swap for a caffeinated pre-workout, so count any training caffeine from that product's own label. Our comparison of pre-workout and energy drinks walks through reading a stimulant panel.
Beetroot is a common training-day pick, and unlike the gummy, its label sets a meal-based clock: one 2-capsule serving daily, 20 to 30 minutes before a meal, with an 8 oz (237 ml) glass of water. ODS adds a caveat: no one yet knows whether beetroot powder in a supplement acts like the beet juice used in studies.
From our shop: Organic Beetroot Capsules — two vegetable capsules hold 1,300 mg of organic beetroot powder, and the label pairs that daily dose with a meal rather than a workout.
When don't you need a cordyceps supplement?
You don't need cordyceps if you're after a fast pre-workout lift, you're cutting added sugar, or you already take a mushroom blend that includes it.
- You want to feel something in 30 minutes. Our cordyceps gummy and drops list no caffeine, and LiverTox says the benefits claimed for cordyceps haven't been convincingly shown in human trials.
- You're cutting sugar. Two gummies add 4 g of added sugar a day, 8% of the Daily Value. The drops are sweetened with stevia and show no sugar line.
- You already take our Mushroom Capsules. Each 2-capsule serving already holds 266 mg of cordyceps powder.
- Meals, fluids and training aren't sorted yet. The ODS exercise sheet says no performance supplement replaces a healthy diet, and it names eating well, drinking enough, fitness and proper training as the base.

Who should talk to a healthcare provider before trying cordyceps?
Cordyceps calls for a healthcare provider's input first if you're pregnant or nursing, under 18, on prescription medicine, managing a medical condition or scheduled for surgery.
Every label in our table carries the same caution: "Do not exceed recommended dose. Consult a physician if pregnant, nursing, under 18, or have a medical condition."
Name the gummy's 25 mg of ginkgo leaf when you ask. According to NCCIH's ginkgo safety page, ginkgo may increase the risk of bleeding in people taking anticoagulant (blood-thinning) drugs, and it may be unsafe during pregnancy.
The ODS exercise sheet adds that expert advice matters most for teenagers and anyone with a medical condition. Bring the bottle so your provider can read the whole panel. If anything feels off after you start, stop and ask; our cordyceps side effects guide goes deeper.
FAQ: when to take cordyceps
How long does cordyceps take to work?
No one can give you an honest timeline for cordyceps. The two LiverTox trials that tested cordyceps alone on exercise performance ran 5 and 12 weeks, and both ended similar to placebo. Those numbers describe how long researchers watched, not when you'd notice anything, and none of our labels promises a time frame. If you try it, use one product at the label amount in one daily slot.
Can you take cordyceps every day?
Yes, daily is exactly how our cordyceps gummy and drop labels read, and the cordyceps-only trials LiverTox summarizes all dosed it daily too. LiverTox says side effects across cordyceps trials were described as uncommon and minimal. A daily direction still isn't a personal safety promise, so stay at one to two gummies or one 1 ml dropper, and ask a healthcare provider first if you take medication.
How long does cordyceps stay in your system?
We found no federal source that says how long cordyceps stays in your body. LiverTox notes that cordyceps extracts contain many compounds, including cordycepin, and that the ones behind its purported effects aren't known. So any hour count you read online is a guess. Our labels describe a daily amount, not a dose timed to how long it lingers.
When should you take cordyceps capsules?
Take cordyceps capsules when their own label says, because capsule directions vary by brand. Ours, the Mushroom Capsules, call for one 2-capsule serving daily, 20 to 30 minutes ahead of a meal, with a glass of water. Another brand's capsule may say something different, and its label wins for that bottle.
Should you stop taking cordyceps before surgery?
Tell your surgeon about cordyceps before any procedure, and follow their advice on when to stop. Our gummies also list 25 mg of ginkgo leaf per gummy, and NCCIH notes that ginkgo may increase bleeding risk in people taking anticoagulant drugs, so mention both ingredients by name. Wait for your care team's go-ahead before you start taking it again.
