Three colours of maca, on one panel
Maca is Lepidium meyenii, a root vegetable grown at altitude in the Peruvian Andes, and the root is the part this panel names on all three of its maca rows. It's bought and sold by the colour of that root, and the three colours named on this panel are the three you'll see on any maca listing you compare against: black, red and yellow.
That's the part worth slowing down on. A lot of maca capsules print a single line — "maca root", one number — and leave you guessing at what's actually in the mix. This panel splits it into three rows and puts a milligram figure on each. Black maca root carries the largest share at 1000mg. Red maca root and yellow maca root come in at 250mg apiece. Nothing here is folded into a proprietary blend, so you can read it line by line against any other bottle on the shelf.
The word "organic" on this label describes the maca itself, exactly as the panel writes it: Organic Maca Root, on all three rows.
The fourth row
Black pepper rounds the panel out at 5mg. It's Piper nigrum, printed on this panel as Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)(fruit) — the fruit of the pepper vine. At 5mg it's a fraction of the maca beside it, and like the maca rows it's printed as its own line with its own number.
How it's taken
Two capsules once a day, ideally 20-30 minutes before a meal. The capsule shell is hypromellose, a plant-cellulose material, which is what keeps this one vegan; vegetable stearate is the only other ingredient. Maca in its raw form is a powder with a strong malty, earthy flavour that plenty of people never get on with — in a capsule there's nothing to taste, nothing to measure and nothing to blend into a smoothie to hide it.
Who it's for
Anyone shopping maca root by the milligram rather than by the marketing. People who specifically want black maca rather than whatever colour a generic bottle happens to contain, and people who'd rather have all three colours than pick one. Vegans, since both the capsule and the filler are plant-based. And anyone who's tried maca powder, disliked the taste, and wants the root itself in a form they'll keep taking.
How to use it
As a dietary supplement, take two (2) capsules once a day. For best results, take 20-30 min before a meal or as directed by your healthcare professional.
